Is this a good deal? GMT II C - on Craigslist
Hi All,
Am researching a steel GMT II C that is essentially brand new... Been worn once or twice I've been told. No scratches. I may be able to get the watch for around $4500 - $4800 and will have it verified by authorized dealer before purchasing. The watch was initally purchased at a local AD and comes with a receipt. Does this seem like a good price? Thx! S |

I personally would never buy a watch off of Craigslist. But that's me. Price wise is very a good deal as long as it comes with box, papers, etc.

thats pretty much lowest I seen on any used GMT2C on any internet sites.
as long as the seller is OK with getting verified before the exchaging funds, go for it, |

I'm sure that there are lots of scammers on Craigslist but I will be able to verify the serial number with the Authorized Dealer it was purchased from... And watch does come with papers... I'm sure that this still could be a scam but it would seem tricky to be able to fake a receipt and serial number and have an AD verify it... I'm sure it's possible somehow, though.

The AD won't open the watch up, however... They will however, confirm that the receipt is original, that the serial numbers match, and that the watch looks authentic from the outside... is that good enough?

I mean seller wants to sell it, it should not be a big deal and the seller could take photo of inside at same time. |

Only a professional watchmaker should. The Rolex needs to be resealed to be waterproof. The best ways to check if authentic, are the correct numbers and weight. |

I have seen new GMT 2C That have the correct serial numbers and a cloned movement recently for sale and they are fake but would fool even an AD or somebody who hasnt handled many.Yes they are out there. The fakes get better every year and now I am afraid to say its at a new higher level. The bottom line is you are either an expert or a gambler when buying things you are not sure of to save maybe 10%-25%.I dont want to steal this thread so I will start a new 1 about something that I saw this weekend

always curious...
I think when buying from a Selling site, such as CL, you could asking the seller if your not local if they bought it new and from which dealer, you could verify from the dealer some information, if that's possible? Do not know... but that would tell you if in fact that watch was indeed purchased new from a Rolex Authorized Dealer. I'm sure there are ways to verify a watches authenticity just as sure as having the watch opened for verification.
Deals are always out there, its just whether your able to assure yourself its a deal or not. |

No. If the AD won't open it, you need to find a reputable and certified Rolex watchmaker with a Rolex parts account. They can verify that the serial and model numbers were laser-etched, the bracelet serial is within spec, the correctness of the LEC, the 3186 movement, dial, and bezel. It costed me $50to do for my 16613 but worth every penny for peace of mind. If the seller is not willing to let you do this, please walk away from this.

Any Rolex-trained watchmaker that opens it up can tell you if it is authentic or not. You don't need to know much yourself, only be sure you find a reputable watchmaker. I would imagine there are plenty in NYC.

Many would probably wont buy from Craigslist, but then again I did. My watch is real, it was sent to Rolex and came back no problem. I just had an AD verified it, it also just so happened that the seller was a TRFer, so I don't think we should jump to conclusions so quick on CL. There are precautions though before you buy. Just be smart about it.

Craig's List has a lot, and I mean a lot, of stolen pictures from other Internet sites. Does the ad for the GMT have the little eBay photo sign in the corner? Do a search on eBay and look through the pictures of watches for sale. IMHO, if you do not know what to look for in a genuine Rolex, then stick with a trusted pre-owned brick & mortar store or an AD.

This reminds me of an ad I just saw for a GMT-II on CL, it had a photo on there that was pretty bad quality, but you can totally tell that right next to the watch it said "Larry". Not sure if it was really Larry's though.

Craig's list is great, we use it all the time to buy and sell stuff locally. If you're in the market for, say, furniture, then buying local is a must.
Anyway, meet face to face, verify everything is legit, and you've got a great price most of us would be jealous for. If anything smells funny, though, just walk away. |

^ Right on. If ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING doesn't seem in place, tell him you'll get back to him. Be careful if you're walking with cash too. Who knows if he'll follow you afterwards if the deal goes sour....

Too many cons out there. I would look in the for sale area here. For a little more a new one, or a nice used one can be had, along with peace of mind. Ron
