Hi guys,

Just picked up a new SS Sub Date and love it! A quick question though -

When unscrewing the crown it feels tight and a bit gritty, is this normal?

Not sure about the gritty part, but mine is tight. When I pull it out to the first and second positions, it takes a little effort to get everything to line up for position 2 (setting the time).

Let it run for a few weeks...like a newborn baby, it probably needs to get used to its new life!

Oh, and where the hell is the picture?????

Congrats and welcome to TRF.

The "gritty" feel is not normal. Just take it into any qualified watchmaker. He will apply some special "dry" lubricant on the stem threads which should get rid of the grit.

Will take a few minutes while you wait.

Let a pro do it. A wet lube will bugger up the seals. A special "dry" lube needs to be used.

Thanks for the response guys. Have tried it a few times now it is less gritty but not as easy to unscrew as my omega seamaster, but different brands different feel I guess.

Like I said, that "gritty" issue is minor, but still serious and needs to be attended to.

If you continue to screw and unscrew the crown with that grit on the threads, you will eventually start to strip down the threads with the added friction.

You need to address this issue asap. It's an easy fix, but does need to be done.

Just wondering what the power reserve is on this watch?

Also what should come with the watch from new. I have box, a few booklets and the guarantee card. He put my details on the computer as well. Is this correct? It was from an AD so I assume it should be.

I get around 40+ hours reserve from my Sub LV when completely wound and left off the wrist.

And yes, perfectly normal for the AD to do that. That's in case the watch is ever stolen so that it can be reported to Rolex who the owner of the watch actually is so that they can strike it off their list if it does ever happen.

I was just confused about what 'papers' means when people say box and papers. Is it possible to obtain a COSC certificate for the watch? Is there an authenticity certificate as well?

Sorry for all the questions, new to this

Rolex started using the plastic card around 2005 replacing the paper certificate. That's all you need.
Regarding the gritty feel....just bring it back to your AD.

Not a great discount by any means, getting any in the UK is a bonus!

It seems that a bigger discount is available on the ND Sub than the Date.

It is a great watch though
