Best Band Ever....
Ok I mean music band. Not sure if it has been done here before, but wanted to see what you guys thought. What is the best band and why do you think so?
For me, it is U2. From the moment I heard them the first time. Why? Because, besides their music having so much meaning. They are so diverse. They have recorded songs with such open array of artist. From Johnny Cash to BB King to Green Day and Frank Sinatra. I mean, who else has done this? Even Pavoratti!!!! And all their songs have meaning much like Bob Dylan. So lets hear it.... DSC01588.jpg

Faith has got it right Dan....they evolved and music evolved with them. Stones are a great house band.

Yes. Although nowadays they're so far removed from the current scene that many younger people tend to discount their effect on modern music, especially the recording industry.

OK, OK.. calm down you two. Do I have to separate you again ? I did mention I was a big fan of their music, no ?
But they started as a "band", only in the loosest possible sense. This is copied from Wiki: __________________________________________________ Before debut album Tom Scholz first started writing music in 1969 while he was attending MIT, where he wrote an instrumental, entitled "Foreplay".[4] While attending MIT, Scholz joined the band "Freehold," where he met guitarist, Barry Goudreau and drummer, Jim Masdea, who would later become members of Boston. After graduation with a master's degree in mechanical engineering, Scholz worked for Polaroid, where he used his salary to buy a recording studio in his basement, and to finance demo tapes recorded in professional recording studios.[4] These early demo tapes were recorded with Jim Masdea on drums, and Scholz on guitar. The demo tapes were sent to record companies, but received consistent rejections.[4] However while recording demo tapes, Scholz met singer Brad Delp, and together they formed the band Mother's Milk with Goudreau and Masdea in 1973.[4] The band quickly disbanded, but Scholz worked with Masdea and Delp to produce six demos. Scholz recorded all the tracks on the demos, except for the drums, and used self-designed pedals to create the desired guitar sound.[4]The trio worked for five years to get a record contract.[5] Upon signing with Epic Records in 1975, the management company insisted that Jim Masdea be replaced.[4][6] Scholz however insisted that Masdea be included in some way in the future record. Because Scholz recorded most of the tracks on the newer demos, playing live shows that resembled the sound on these demos was impossible without a second guitarist. The band added Goudreau as a second guitarist, Fran Sheehan on bass, and later Sib Hashian on drums.[4] In addition to the firing of Masdea, the record label also insisted that Scholz re-record the demo tapes in a professional studio. However, Scholz wanted the record to be recorded in his basement studio, so that he could work at his own pace.[4] Upon request of Tom Scholz, Masdea played drums on the track "Rock and Roll Band," and the instrumentation was recorded in Scholz's studio.[4] The multitrack tapes were then brought to Los Angeles, where Brad Delp added vocals and the album was mixed by John Boylan. It was then where the band was officially named "Boston," by suggestion of Boylan and engineer Warren Dewey.[4] __________________________________________________ __ Hey, you think that's bad, one of my all-time favorites 60/70's bands, The Grass Roots, were even worse. Their first couple of hits were recorded by the writers, then they put out a cattle call for guys to actuually play them live in various S.Cal venues

OK, we got the obvious ones out of the way. The Beatles, Led Zepplin, The Stones and lets not forget Pink Floyd. All Gods of music. But, to me, U2 encompasses the best of these bands.
but thats just MY opinion. Keep them coming!

While U2 deserves more credit than being called the flavor of the month/pedestrian, I think U2 was at their best when they were young, Ireland was in turmoil, and they had something to be really mad about. I haven't seen them live since 1988 (I had 4th row seats for the Joshua Tree tour) and I refuse to sully my memory of that by seeing them again. I refused free tickets to their latest show a couple of months ago... Radiohead gets my vote. |

For me it would be the Beyond - one of the most influential Chinese bands. I grew up with them and always wondered how big they would be today if their lead (Wong Ka Kui) hadn't pass away in a freak accident. (RIP)

I wouldn't like to say.... I mean The Eagles are ok, then look at the likes of the Bee Gees and the amount of hits they had and wrote for other artists. ACDC might be up there for me, but then Queen weren't that bad either.

Dude, you echo most of my friends. Give their How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb a chance. There is a song there about Bono's father called Can't Make it On Your Own.
Here in Miami, he played that songs shortly after his father's death. He did an extended version. I had front row seats, as you can see from my pictures, and he sang the ENTIRE song with his eyes closed. All you can see were tears coming from his eyes. I got chills and many people around me started crying as well. Listen to that song and Crumbs from your table.

But seriously Pep, can we even rank these bands,
or is it just a spitball fight? We get moved by music for so many different reasons. |

You are absolutely right, music moves us for different reasons. Just trying to have a friendly debate. Nothing more. Ranking is based on preference. Just wanted to see what others thought. I hate those count downs. So subjective that you can't really rank. I just see U2 get such a bad rap. Yes Bono is preachy and yes they totally changed their sound in the early 90s. But pedestrian? I guess I'm a little defensive when it comes to U2 because I am moved by them more than any other band.

I like the Gorillaz. Serious.
I have all their songs and their concert from Harlem. I'm a huge fan. Its the only group that I NEVER tire of. I know that there is no one best band but to me the Gorillaz are it. |
