Does my AD have his facts right???

Hey Guys ...and Gals,

When I purchased my new DJ I was undecided between two dials, I asked my AD if down the road I decided to change dials would that be a problem. He said not at all, but Rolex will no longer supply dealers with spare parts (to keep a tighter control on counterfeiting) and I would need to send the watch to Rolex and they would keep my old dial ...also for counterfeiting reasons. This does not sound right/fair! Why shouldn't I be entitled to keep all my original parts? What if I wanted to put it back to its original state for re-sale purposes or maybe I prefer the look of the old dial. Does my Dealer have his facts straight?

I know I have other options rather than go to Rolex if and when I ever decide to swap out my dial and have it replace with another authentic Rolex dial, but how could Rolex do such a thing? And if this is true, and they do keep your dial, do they credit you for it?

Thanks guys,

unfortunately I have heard the same thing.

The part that really bugs me - is that we pay for the dial when we buy the watch. Then we pay for a new one if we switch and they keep the original one that we PAID FOR.

At $300.00 for the replacement dial, are we getting a discount or deal that justifies them keeping it?

Back in the 70's and 80's, Rolex would return to the owner the dial that was being replaced in a small plastic round case. I know this from first hand experience as I use to change the dial on my DD about every 2 years and had a whole collection of dials.

You would not have DateJust 1970 blue dial now?

You don't "own" that Rolex, Ralph. You just get the privilege of renting it as long as you follow the rules.

It may sound like BS but unfortunately it's true, at least in the US.

Yeah Dan, agreed. I meant that it is BS that they can do this. I have heard that's the way it is though. Seems rather ridiculous to me.

Tim, that's what I thought. Sorry, sometimes my words don't add up to the sum of their parts.

In the UK, the price of the dial swap reflects the cost of swapping the dial, and resealing the case fully. The old dial, provided it is in immaculate condition, covers the cost of the new dial. Give or take a little bit of profit.

But long story short is that your old dial is pretty much a swap, in terms of material cost. The rest is labour etc

If that's really what the breakdown is then I guess I can get on board with it.. Meh,, I'll just dwell on which dial to get for a few more months before I take the dive

I'm nearly positive that what you describe violates antitrust rules in the United States.

I'm having my dad's Sub overhauled as we speak. When I dropped it off, I asked if I could have the used parts back with the watch...after a pause and a bit of stink eye from the counter person ...the answer was.."NO".

My AD...

My AD, with their own servicecenter, gives every part except movement parts back to me.
If you go in for a dial they change within the hour and give back your old dial in a small plastic container.
A WR test with change of al seals costs 45 euro and while doing that they change bezel and crystal for cost of parts.

They've been AD since 1949 and deliver superb service.

I swapped bezels on my GMT II at the RSC is Los Angeles in Sept, 2004. I switched from Coke to Pepsi. They allowed me to keep the old Coke bezel. Seems to be an inconsistent application of rules from RSC to RSC here.

Yeah, when I got my dial replaced at the Omega Center in NYC, I asked if I could have back the dial. They explained to me that to be on the safe side, they rarely return dials and parts due to counterfeiters. It makes sense to me.

I agree on what they say, however it is your property and I think you should be able keep it.

Unfortunately they don't give a rats rectum what you think.

You always have the choice to not service with them.
