Hey guys, so I was given a brand new Sub 16610 for Christmas, and to my dismay, it already has a few little dents and scratches on the chrome sides (not sure of the official name for this part of the watch, but on either side of the face where the winder is, etc). I'm not even really sure how these might have happened in the first place, and though they're very small, I'm not looking forward to any more of this, as eventually they'd start becoming noticeable. Anything I can do to remedy this situation?

Also, if I have the sub serviced, can they remove these dents/scratches?

You have to try awful hard to get a dent on the Stainless Steel sides of a new Sub...

Are you sure that you've taken off the protective plastic coating....

I thought I had taken all the stickers off of mine until one day I looked down in horror to find this huge scratch....on my plastic coating!

Yeah guys, the coating is, unfortunately, removed, and has been for about two weeks.

don't worry about it. If one's Sub is 100% free of scratches, then they are obviously not using it right.

Well the first scratch/ding is the hardest and quite honestly bound to happen. I personally would not get it buffed out or polished until it is due for a service. But if you decide to get it polished, make sure you take it to a watchmaker that knows what they are doing, search through Terry Newton's old posts and you will see what I mean. The jeweler essentially ruined the shape of his case by over polishing an area. I have seen Dalton's case-work on this forum and it is spectacular.

BTW, welcome to the forum and Congrats on the Sub!

If you play golf, watch for the inside bit on the snap of your glove. I just get gloves without the snap.

At some point you just stop looking for scratches.

It's alright, I've dented the sides of the head on my M series Sub also. I let my AD look at it and he tells me that it's been pushed in since its on the edge. Its actually just bent. I don't worry too much about it these days since I know Rolex can take care of it.

Yes I will take some pics when I get a chance tonight.

Its been almost 2 years since I've had my watch and I realized that the sides are very cloudy, so last night I decided to put some cape cod on it. It shines like a mirror but the scratches are still there.

Be worried if your watch has chrome sides

.... but seriously, I'm surprised you have managed to mark it, without a cringe-worthy, OMG what have I done, look at your wrist type moment

My favourites are airplane seat buckles (after a few drinks) and door latches.

I had my Sub cleaned a couple of months back and the watchmaker at the AD commented on the "gash" I had near the crown (which he got back to NEW looking)...anyway, I had no idea how the it got there but I knew it was there for a year or two and it always bothered me. Long story shorter (sorry, I ramble), I was flying last month and banged the watch, luckily no scratch but I instantly realized that this must have been how I damaged it to begin with.

Be careful when buckling up :-) .

How in the heck did you do that? I saw the pix of your sub and it takes alot to get a gash like that. The worst enemy of any watch is a door handle...how many times have you opened and walked through a door only to have it slam on you and catch your watch? It's happened to all of us, Good luck

I wasn't the person who started the thread, I just shared my horror story
about a deep scratch (but no dent) I had gotten on my Sub a few years ago. I never knew how it got there but realized the other week that I think I did it on an airline seat. Those things are so close together that my hand must have caught one of the metal pieces and scrathed the watch...it's hard to scratch the crown side. My AD even commented on how bad it was.

I am trying to find a before and after photo but out of 100+ pics of the Sub, I never took it from the crown side because it looked terrible.
Either way, it's amazing how good the AD can get it looking... Mine looks brand new and it has been on my wrist every day for over 8 years until the YM came along. The Sub is still on my wrist 5 + days a week.

Here it is after the recent TLC...not bad looking (in my opinion) for an "old" watch.

It might be the first scratches, but definetly wont be the last, trust me; it will happen again. If I were you I would wait a year or two before getting it polished.

Also as crazy as it may sound, what I learned to do is take better care of my right hand(watch hand)

Just wear it and not worry about it. I freaked out too with scratches and dents when I first got mine. They will get scratches and dents no matter what you do. Once you get more they will all blend in. Bet I couldn't see them at all if I looked at it while it was on your wrist. I enjoy wearing them every day and won't get them polished until it's service time and even then I'm going to have them skip the polish. No reason to polish them when it will just all start over but with a little less metal on the watch than before. I'm going to hold off on polish until they are super beat up.

It happened when it fell about 5 feet after being hit by a basketball. I took it off so it would be safe while I was in the game. What I didn't expect was that it was going to defeat the purpose of taking it off my wrist. Also, learned that the safest place for a watch is on your wrist.

I'm not too worried. I feel that Rolex will work wonders on it. I've only had it for 2 years. Finally decided to cape cod it last night since it was cloudy, but no more polishing until service time.

Wowzers - that is a bit more like a craze.

If you wear on your LH, its hard to imagine you doing this, without some damage to your arm - its very central and has taken the edge off

The first dent always hurts. Afterwards you don't worry about it and simply enjoy your Rolex.

I've had 2 dents on my Sub that was deeper than your Subdate. RSC will 'fix' it at your next service.

Afterwards you add a new dent before too long! So don't fret about it. Cheers,
