Someone finally complimented my Rolex...
I wear my platinum Yacht-Master on a daily basis and the only people who ever recognize it are those who work at an AD.
So yesterday I was at a client site working in the server room when the contact came in to discuss the issue he was having. Out of no where, he said nice yacht-master. This actually made me uncomfortable and I just said thanks and continue discussing the network. He usually wears an Omega sea-master, but I wasn't sure if he was into watches or if he just wore them for the brand. It's nice that someone made a compliment, but at the same time I feel uncomfortable that someone knows what I am wearing. But oddly, that only applies to immediate family, close friends and clients. Other WIS and strangers, I don't care. Does anyone else feel the same way? |

I can see why you would feel uncomfortable, but this guy sounds like he knows at least a little about watches, so I wouldn't sweat it.

No fair! I have done work in several datacenters and never gotten a compliment . I can see where you are coming from though. I think I would get a tad uncomfortable upon someone actually mentioning my watch.

I prefer when my customers compliment my watch. It is when they do not that I am a little uncomfortable. If they compliment it, then they appreciate it.

I bet he's just a wis like you! Not a lot of people can tell a Rolex off hand not to mention the model of the Rolex! He probably wanted to talk watches with you and trying to break the ice by complimenting your watch! But the reply he got made him think twice!

Hey Vu, + 1, don't sweat it....
always a little awkward if somene comments or you comment.. never sre if they are a WIS and fellow enthusiast, or if they just bought it because it they liked it more than the TAG/Omega/Rado et al they saw! If he recognised it as a Yachtmaster, then he is obviously a connoisseur of fine time pieces, and you would be safe to engage him in a Rolex conversation.... If he just said "is that a Rolex", likely not a true WIS, so tell him it's fake! The owner of the local DVD store here was wearing a DSSD one day, what looked like a vinatge sub a week later, and then I caught a glimps of a modern sub... so I figured he must be a WIS... so without trying to embaress him, and outside of earshot of other customers, I said something nice about his "collection"... and he looked at me blankly... I wasn't sure if I offended him, surprised him... or who knows? Like I said, often awkward...

I understand. I feel that way if I feel the person comlimenting me is just saying the comliment for the name or the style of the watch. I would apprecite it more if it was for the watch in its entirety style, name, movement bracelet

I wouldn't worry too much about it, Vu. If the guy sounded genuine in his compliment, then it's all good!!

It's always good to get a compliment, as long as it's sincere. I would like to think that if a person is complimenting my watch, he or she is also complimenting my good taste. However, in the past couple of years, I can remember only getting one compliment on a watch of mine. It was a Breitling Avenger Skyland Blacksteel Limited Edition. It is indeed a beautiful watch, however not for me, or I would still have it.
I find it very strange, now that I think of it, that most people have no problem making an insult or a criticism, but very few people have the ability to give a sincere compliment. Not on the forum mind you, we are all here to talk about and admire each other's watches. I mean society in general. And the funny thing is, that it feels so good to give a sincere compliment, and very negative giving an insult or a criticism. Why then would we not be constantly trying to make ourselves and others feel good? I know, and have known, many people who obviously feel awkward to pay a compliment. Not saying that they are insulting or critical either. Just seem to go silent, rather than pay that sincere impromptu compliment. I think that most of you on this forum are wonderful! And so are your watches. Anyway, I had better , I'm spending way too much time off topic here. Cheers , Carl

The fact that he recognized it by model probably meant he was a little more than just an average joe who knows nothing about watches. Some people can tell its a rolex, but I have yet to meet anyone who can spot it by model in the wild.

The only watch I get comments on is my 18k/SS Daytona with champaigne dial, which is on the blingy side and quite a beautiful watch. Once a pilot commented on my submariner as I got on the plane, which I though was wierd because every other male traveling by air seems to wear one.

I have yet to meet anyone who knew my watch was a Rolex from sight. I get, perhaps once a week, a "nice watch, what kind is it?" but never a "nice GMT-IIc" or "nice Rolex." I do tend to notice other people's watches tho, I just never speak up about it.

This doesn't sound like a manpanion encounter. Those can be very uncomfortable. Those normaly consist of several bad WIS "NO NO's". The questions are normally one of the following
1. Nice watch!...What kind is it? 2. Is that a real Rolex? 3. How much was it? 4. They grab your arm and turn your wrist to read the dial A real WIS encounter is usually a simple confirmation of the model, or a nod of the head followed by "Nice watch" NO TOUCHING! |

Hey, most IT techs make a decent living...they can have some toys too right??? But I do see your point, a compliment from a stranger sometimes catches you off guard...

When I first got my watch(the next day) someone complimented me and couldn't say enough about how much he wanted a GMT and what a great watch it was, That was the only encounter I have had, It was nice to talk about watches with someone else who likes them. It has not happened since, I feel like 90% of the population couldn't spot a Rolex if you slapped them in the face with it, they just don't think to look at your wrist, But I'm ok with that, I have TRF for watch talk

Same experience with a Datejust II
I've had my DJ II since mid-December (TT, slate dial, green/black romans) and I've had several people--in all situations (work, shopping, etc.) comment on "how gorgeous that watch looks."
While I appreciate the compliments, I'm never quite sure how to respond. My feeling seems to be one of both appreciation and self-conciousness. Anybody else? |

I dont care if they compliment the watch, I usually do a quick glance to see what if any watch they are wearing...striking up a conversation will depend on many circumstances....
I have to laugh when they do ask "So how much was it" Thats my cue to change the subject... |
