Magnetism

I had my watch in my pocket and also had my ipod headphone in there.
How do I know if my GMT is slightly and not fully magnetised?
How long does it take for a watch to get magnetised when near a magnetic source, minutes, hours or days?

If any watch becomes temporally magnetised and would doubt if yours is.The
first symptoms they normally speed by seconds or even minutes. And run a little erratic or come to a complete stop and refuse to start. And too magnetise any Swiss watch it must be in direct contact with quite a strong magnetic field. But a very simple job to de-magnetise any watch most good high street watchmakers could do it if needed.

This happened to my watch due to a magnet from a case. Took it to the AD and it was all better within 2 minutes. No charge too. Some ADs may have a fee. They have a special device to demagnetize. No worries.

How does a device demagnetise a watch in a few minutes? When I was a kid I stuck metal to a magnet and eventually the metal got magnetised and stayed that way for sometime.

I seriously doubt your i-pod ear buds have enough magnetic flux arse to do anything to your watch.

Probably not what the jeweler does but if you want to demagnetize something like a ferrous rod - just hit it on a solid surface.

Which part of the watch becomes magnetized? last time I checked, SS is not one of the metals that can become a magnet (I believe there are only three).

Correct, it is not the case, but the small parts within. Primarily it is the hairspring. When magnetized, the coils of the spring can stick to each other. This shortens the amplitude of the spring's cycle. This is why magnetized watches tend to run fast, not slow, as our logical heads tell us. They can stop completely or start and stop.
