many folks love them. i have never found them cool. I like the case but the whole point of mechanical watches is the fact is that they are mechanical and beautiful. Put a battery inside, then it makes it much easier to "make time". If they had an automatic mvmt in that case I would definitely own one, until then I collect only automatic/manual wind watches.

Your desire may just be a passion to own every kind of Rolex available?
I always associate beautiful swiss jeweled (or is that jeweled swiss?) movements with a rolex. If I wanted a quartz I'll look at a seiko or citizen |

Kyle is correct. They did make for a very short time(around 1980) that style case/bracelet with a mechanical movement, pretty sure it was model 1630. They are pretty hard to come by and if you do, they bring a pretty penny. Especially the SS ones.

Could it be the case shape which I have been liking more and more over time... or is it the fact that it is a quartz ..... or maybe the fact that they can be had relatively cheaply.... whatever it is, it's a strong urge to say the least. |

I get an urge to have one every few months or so. I'd like a DD one, makes it even rarer and that much cooler than a normal DD.

I love OysterQuartz!!
I owned this clean dial pre-COSC 17013 for about 3 days a few years ago. I've always loved the design and hope to have another soon. In the meantime I found this one, a reference 1630. A pretty good compromise between the DateJust movement and pre-OQ case and bracelet.

Here you can see a OysterQuartz who I found in some bad
condition. He needs some kind of refreshment and here I will show you how nice he could be. Here is how he looks and he have a hard life behind him. To fix him I have to get some 800 waterproof sandpaper and I will go slowly on him with the sandpaper. I have to go on the bracelet in one way so the lines will be straight ahead agains the bracelet. Start from the back and go nice and easy and very slow. You will see if you go to fast it´s easy to get some crossed lines. When I´m finish with that I use a sandpaper sponge who look like this. I bought the sponge in a auto spareparts shop and it´s soft so it will follow the bracelet. Here is the result. After that I will use a Dremel machine with some polishing trundles and some polish compound/wax to get the high polished surfaces shine like a mirror. Maybe we should take a look inside too? Rolex cal 5035 All the parts ready to be putted together. It ticks once every seconds, so many believe it´s a fake. Then I give it some more minor work like a new battery, crown, tube and gaskets. I hope you enjoy the tour. Jocke

I like them as well. My watchmakers tells me they can be quite costly to service. So say, every 5-7 years you may be spending a couple hundred dollars more......and down the road the parts will be hard to come by. Just something to think about. I'm thinking about picking one up as well.

There was a thread posted a few weeks ago about this model.......(.the nice guy who got one in Switzerland in 1983 new)...........i never even considered the OQ before that time.
After finding out all about it and thatthere are alot differences between quartzmvmnts i concluded.....i was ignorant to ignore them!!!!!!!!!!!! I absolutely love the modern style case and how it matches and integrates beautifully with the bracelet. The dials have great, clarity and retro coolness IMO. The COSC for quartz is 0.07 secs daily at 23 celcius.....0.07!!!!!!!!!......blows my mind!!!! I am on the hunt for a nice example....and i don't care how long that hunt takes. |
