New Rolex AD mandate?
I was wandering through the mall and stopped by a Mayor's that I usually browse their Rolex selection. Late last year, and prior, they had always quoted me at least a 20-25% discount, even on SS models. They said that just recently, Rolex has warned them that if they discount, they will have their authorization pulled.
Has anyone else heard of this new strong-arming from Rolex or is perhaps just at specific chains? They indicated it was nationwide and fairly recent. |

I live in S. Fl and this is the same story Mayors has told me for years. When I bought my SD there...no discount...that was 5 years ago.
This year..I went looking for the DSSD and same story. They are full of crap. Find another AD...I have one who gives 20% off....no more Mayors BS for me.

I am still amazed at all these discount stories...are these actual discounts taken on actual purchases?
I may be the only one but it seems to me unles you have a longstanding relationship - I.e. You have purchased a couple of rolexes or more from an AD - your price is MSRP. You may get a discount on an overpriced precious metal model but that's it. What Ad would give 25% off on a hard to stock GMTIIC???? Or other SSmodel. I think there is some folklore / urban myths in play here. |

Outside of Canada, which has an almost 20 %GST, I have never seen a 20-25% discount on any SS rolex watch at an AD that wasn't going out of business.......... Most Grey Dealers barely approach that......

In Ontario we have 13% tax (8% PST and 5% GST) and I always start the bargaing at the MSRP and no additional tax to be added. Usually for Rolex or Tudor ( 3 seperate purchases so far) I can get an additional 15%. So if you include the fact that the additional 13% is not added, It works out to be in the 20-25% range.

While discounts can be had at a Canadian AD, it's our taxes that kill us. My AD gave me a decent discount on the DSSD so I went for it. He could not match US pricing on a RG Daytona though.

20% discount is not a myth and not from AD's going out of buiness...from my experience, it is offered by indepnedent AD's, not chains and is offered in markets that have been hit a little harder than major metro areas that have high rollers that can afford retail prices. ...and it is offered on SS models, not just TT models...and yes, it is offered on the GMT2 c. My sugggestion would be to get to know a local, small market AD, give rationalization to have them "save face" relative to a 20% discount and tell stories from your research across the country on AD discounts that you have researched from independent dealers.

Totally agree. I recently visited an AD in Toronto when I was shopping for the Sub. I was quoted 6800 minus 20% plus 13% for tax. The total was around 6200. I ended up buying from someone on TRF and saved over 1k. IMHO it's not really worth shopping at an AD in Canada, unless you really know them. I purchased an Explorer from an AD back in 2005 and paid almost 6k five years ago. Now I can buy the same watch for 1k less on the grey market and prices have gone up since. Definitely worth buying grey or pre-loved from someone on TRF.

I was seriously shopping for deal on a new SS Sub Date LV, and no one was giving over 10%. This includes chain jeweler ADs and independent store ADs. No kidding. Finally my longtime jewler (who is an AD) had decided to stop carrying Rolex because of their meddling in the stores business (i.e., couldn't carry Omega, etc.) and gave me 25% off! I jumped on it...but I know this was pure luck on my part. I also live in a major NE city so I shopped plenty of stores. This is just my experienc though...

How would Rolex find out?
Are there whistle blowers? rival jewellers? My personal experience - in the US it is very difficult to get any kind of discount..I got 5% plus no tax on a TT blue sub. Most places will do the no tax but only by shipping it out of state. In Canada my AD usually discounts the MSRP 30% - but as mentioned earlier, after you factor in the price differential and then add the 13% ontario sales tax, its still better to go USA when the dollar is at par. in Europe I've found better deals, discount plus VAT but overwhelmingly in the States I'm hit with the zero tolerance for discounting story... leads me to believe that they are all together on the price fixing, or there is some legitimate fear from RolexHQ |

Right. But as I stated the jeweler has decided to no longer carry Rolex...which is why they were giving discounts, so they could deplete their stock. They no longer want to be an AD!

I don't see how Rolex can tell if an AD is giving discounts. The Rolex representative would need full access to the sales receipts, yearly profit margins, operating costs, and a degree in accounting.
