I had an interesting conversation with my friend (actually he is also my boss, and a fellow Rolex-enthusiast) about my recent yearning for a GMT-II C. I told him that it was on my mind, and I was saving up to purchase one. He said it sounded like a great idea, then I told him I had even considered selling my Daytona and buying it immediately. He went like this:

He said as long as he had known me, (about 8 years) I had coveted that SS Daytona. He said I had no qualms about selling my old GMT to get it, and he had never seen me so stoked as when I picked it up from the AD; (he is right by the way). Getting a GMT II by saving up for one is a great idea, but getting rid of my Grail watch is sacrilage.

He gave me this analogy, think of the guy that cheated on Sandra Bullock, (insert any beautiful, wonderful spouse or partner here), why did he do it? Because he wanted something he didn't have, just like I am doing now for the GMT II. I want something new, something different, even though I have something I was so totally crazy about and lusted after for years, I now feel I need something ... new and different.

It kind of clicked in me how absolutely right he was! There is nothing wrong with getting the GMT, and I will save until I get one, but getting rid of a grail... why? Because I want something new... something I don't currently have.... I have something fantastic but lust after something just out of reach. I found it a real eye-opening conversation, and realize deep down if I did get rid of my Daytona, I would definitely regret it.

Anyone else know what I am talking about?

Paul, you are 100% right! I've thought about the very same thing. It's only when we look elsewhere that we often realize we ALREADY have what we want and have had it all along!

Hold on to that special Daytona and plan for the GMT. I am confident you will have it sooner than you think!

I've started dancing at Chippendales to make some extra money... funny thing, I'm not making very much... The only dollar tips I got was to get off the stage....

I know exactly what you're talking about, Paul. I've had thoughts of selling my DSSD for a couple of other pieces. Thankfully, however, I've rationalized my way through it and come back to the conclusion that the Deepsea is my perfect watch - and I just can't part with it!

But those temptations are always there, aren't they!

So, what if you sell the 'tona and get the GMTIIc? What next??

You've got the Rolex disease! Which is totally fine, btw, as long as you accept it....Save for the next watch, but keep your grail. You spent years lusting after it, and flipping it would invalidate that time a little.

Think ahead to that moment when you post on TRF your new GMTIIc and daytona side-by-side pic. What a moment!!

And then, on to the next one. LOL!!!

One more thing....I hope you ended your conversation with your boss with "so....can I have a raise??"

James, a good 'test' I always use to be sure I won't miss the piece I'm considering selling is to put it away for a few weeks/months. Leave it in a drawer and imagine you really sold it. See how you go....do you miss it at all? I've definitely been guilty in the past of acting too hastily, but that's changed (I hope

). Take your time before letting a piece go.....just my advice which I realize isn't worth too much!

The Daytona is a keeper that is a fact and I will not allow you to sell it...even it i have to come lock it in my safe i will do some...so take that out of your brain and think how can you get the funds asap for the next lust...

Face it, we're hunter/gatherer's. The thrill is in the chase and it is a means to an end.
Once your belly is full (new watch) you are happy and content.
But then the meat of the kill rots (new watch isn't new anymore) you move on to find a new meal (watch).

Also, all my dogs have always chased a ball, the thrill of the chase. There can be nothing wrong with their old ball, but they will go nuts if you give them a new one.
Then I'd put the old one away a bring it out a few weeks later, and they get excited again about the old ball again. Does this sound familiar? Just as us WIS get excited to pull a watch back out of the safe.

I always wonder if my dogs ever regretted destroying any of their toys, just as many regret selling/flipping one of their watches they "had to have" once upon a time.

Besides, why does the CEO of Sxxx need to "save" for a watch? Just put it on the company platinum card!

I am with you Paul - subject to temptation for the greener grass - regardless of the poison. This yearning doesn't apply to just watches, either.
There is always thrill in the chase... whenever I'm finding myself wooed (by anything), I remind myself of this and take pause for a few days. The real yearning will usually go away.
My hat's off to you for saving for the new acquisition.
