Buying a submariner in New York

Hi, I am going to New York in the end of May 22th-26th, and I am looking for a SS 16610, new or mint used, or a used mint 16600 (know it might be difficult to find).

Where should I look? Are the ADs running out of the 16610 while waiting for the new submariner, or is it easy to get them still?

Can anyone recommend a store? Or do you recommend the TRF sellers over the ADs?

Are there any stores in New York that carry used Rolex watches?

Thanks for you information

Looking forward to getting myself a Rolex

I believe Tourneau carries used Rolex, not sure about Wempe

You would be better off combing the diamond district for a used Sub, although there you are taking more of a chance with authenticity.

I would recommend a TRF over anyone here in Manhattan, unless you are buying new, or from an established TRF member who is willing to meet you somewhere near the city.

I am sort of in the same predicament, looking for a used Sub, but don't want to deal with getting ripped off in Manhattan, and I am still new to the whole "wiring thousands of dollars to someone" method.

I would work something out with DavidSW and have him ship one to your location while you are visiting us in the USA. Best deal, and he carries only the best. I have bought several from him

I have dealth w/ William Barthman & Co down in the financial district and much prefer them to Tourneau. Ask for Renee.. she is very no-nonsense, but in a good way.

They also ship to your out of state location so you don't get hit w/ the nyc taxes.

Are you suggesting that even the stores in NYC are as disreputable as the street sellers at the South Street Seaport? Boy...tough crowd...

Seaport sellers have kind of subsided a little (I work on Water Street right across from the Seaport)...although still kind of shady.

I totally forgot about William Barthman & Co (right on Broadway by Maiden Lane in Financial district)....which is funny because I go in there quite often. Great selection, awesome sales staff, but I am not sure they carry any used models. The last few times I was there I did not see any Sub models, they are more in tune with the Datejust and Air King crowd.

They are definitely worth a look though. I would still check out Wempe as well, great salespeople there (Wempe is in Midtown)

Good Luck

I bought my SS Sub Date from Barthman this past December... came down to that or the Deep Sea. I thought I wanted the DSSD going in... but the Sub just "spoke to me".. actually they both did and the thing I apprecaited at Barthman is that they realized the inner torment I was going through. They just basically left me alone going back & forth muttering to myself for about a half hour... obviously not the 1st time they'd seen this behavior before LOL!

Thanks for quick and great replies!

I have read several places that William Barthman & Co is a great place to look. So will visit them.

Know what you mean. I don't think I will dare the Diamond District, to scared to get ripped of.

I have heard William Barthman & Co is nice from other people to, so will pay them a visit.

Maybe I should try to see if DavidSW have any watches for me, thanks for the information.

BTW, now that the new SS submariner is coming soon, does this make it easier to get a discount at an AD or harder?

Thanks again

It's pretty expensive to buy in NY, especially when you have to pay tax. Why don't you just buy one here on TRF??

Come and have some fun browsing the AD's.
Who knows on a lucky slow day one AD will give you a discount.

If you are set on buying in NYC and that is your only option then Wempe is your best bet. Do whatever you can to avoid Tourneau.

I would never buy a watch in NYC... You'll pay too much, but on the plus side you should be able to find ANY watch you want..

I was looking for a SS 16610 about 6 weeks ago in Manhattan. At that time, Tourneau at Time Warner Center had only 1 left, and I think there was one available at Tourneau Time Machine on Madison Ave. All the other authorized dealers, including Wempe, Barthman's etc were out. Now, they may have gotten some new shipments since then, but don't be surprised if they don't have any to sell, even at full MSRP. I ended up buying one from a grey dealer with whom I had a personal connection. Good luck with your watch hunt... I coudln't be happy with my new Sub.

I don't think you can actually buy a submariner in NYC...

I'm fairly sure you can rent a Marine for a few hours near Times Square though....

Try Wempe on cnr of 5th and 55th, right next to the Peninsula Hotal. I stayed there a couple of months ago and went to Wempe about 5 times!! SOOOO much good stuff!!

I just saw 2 at Tourneau in LI. about 1/2 hour from the City. Diamond District has great selections if you know who to go to. They would be crazy to sell a non authentic Rolex because as long as it comes with the papers, take it up the block to the RSC and have it regulated or checked for authenticity. If they tell you it's a fake, walk back to the store you purchased it from. They will still be there...If you take this route, let them know before you buy that's what you're going to do... You will save tremendously. However, TRF is probably the best and safest way to go. Good Luck and safe travels.
