Rolex Liquidation Thoughts...

As I mentioned in another thread, I am losing my job soon. The prospects for a new job here in Japan are bleak. I am thinking about moving to Thailand to study and for a job opportunity. One that will pay much less, but should balance out with the cost of living being lower. I have four Rolex now.

So I am going to pare down my collection to one or two Rolex for the following two reasons. I could use the money and I don't want to have three Rolex left unguarded in my apartment while I am out.

So two or three are going. Probably three.

So your thought on what I shoud sell/keep please.

First up the M serial GMT II C.
Probably gets the most wrist time. Has the 2nd time zone capability to keep track of time back home though I never use it. Beauty.

Next the Sub LV. Z serial number.
Gets zero wrist time, but I can't seem to part with it since it has alledgedly become discontinued. Something tells me not to sell it that it might become even more desirable someday. Mint condition.

Next my Z White Dial Daytona.
This one has some sentimental value as it was a pain to get (back when SS Daytonas were more scarce.) It was an achievement for me. It has my initials engraved on the back which the dealer insisted on in order to sell it to me. Gets a fair amount of wrist time.

Finally my T Serial number SS Black Dial Daytona.
Just had this completely overhauled at the Rolex Service Center. Have not worn it since. Still has the stickers on it. This one might be that hardest for me to part with as I think it will only increase in value. However the skinny hads are almost unreadable to my crappy eyes.

So what say ye? Thanks...

If it is about raising as much money as possible, sell the Daytonas and the GMTII-C. Get a black insert for the LV and you got one nice, versatile Rolex.

If you can keep one more, probably the white-dial Daytona.

Best of luck

Sad story, i feel for you but what is more important a watch collection (a very nice one i might add) or putting food on the table when you move from Japan to somewhere you may not get work for a while???

If it were me i would keep the GMT II so you can always keep track of what the time is back home and have some sort of connection, also i am not a lover of the Daytona so it wouldn't bother me getting rid of those even if one did have my initials on its not like its from family that has passed away or something.

The Sub well yes it may be worth more someday but if your not planning on leaving it in a box without wearing it for the next 10 years then i don't see the point of that one. If your not too bothered about the second timezone then i would keep the Sub and if your only going to end up with one watch then the Daytonas are too flashy for everyday use for everything kind of situation but the GMTII and Sub are some of the most versatile watches around. Good luck with your choice.

Sorry to hear of your situation. If it was me I would either...
a) keep the GMT IIc and sell the other three
or
b) sell all four and get another watch in the future

...depending on financial circumstances. When things are uncertain, cash in the bank gives you a greater peace of mind/less distraction than trying to hang on to a watch collection.

Best of luck to you.

Cheers

I have been there and I feel for you. It sounds like the GMT is your "go to" watch so that should be the keeper. I believe you are on target with the Sub going up in value I would salt that away. I would sell the two Daytonas, they will most likely bring the most money right now and can be replaced at a later date. Just my opinion. Good luck

Thanks. I think I should mention that the SS Black Dial is a Zenith. The Zenith Daytona might bring the most in the future...

You're facing a fiscal emergency and you have two valuable watches you never wear, but you don't want to part with because you think they may be great investments. If they were such sure things, we should all be cashing in our savings for them - but we're not.

It sounds like NOW is the future you've waiting for. I'd sell them.

Lot to be said for both these arguments.

But more importantly I've been where you are & I feel your pain I really do.

Sorry to hear of your situation - I hope things pick up for you soon.

If I was in your shoes, I'd sell one of the Daytonas first - probably the black one since the white one has your initials engraved.

If need be, the second one I'd release would the Sub LV since it doesn't seem to get any wrist time.

Good luck again!

I would sell from the bottom up. Meaning from the least desireable (to the market, not you) to the most. The GMT2c is easily found, you want another you could get one in a matter of minutes. The Daytonas not as easy to replace.

I have lived this dream. Just this week I finally got another SD after selling one to feed my family almost 20 years ago.

Easiest sale is the T Daytona due to the recent service - and you say you can't read the hands anyway.

I would sell them slowly - one at a time as money is required. You situation could change abruptly and halt the process.

I actually pawned my SD between 10 and 15 times and redeemed it before I finally sold it. The sales proceeds made it possible for me to embark on a new career which solved all the problems. (and eventually get a nice Sea Dweller again on Tuesday!)

One at a time and get a bank vault for the rest - they are now currency and should be in the bank.

And out of the proceeds, get a nice used Omega SMP or 16013 for $1200 so you still have a nice watch while you job hunt!

Best of luck!

I would say this is great advice. One at the time and only as needed. You can always move a Rolex.

Tom, I'm also sorry that you're going through this. I know how stressful it can be when you've been let go.

My suggestion is also to let the watches go slowly if you can, unless you're 100% happy parting with 3 of them. It sounds like the Zenith Daytona would fetch the most money right now, and while I understand why you are holding on to it, and the lengths you went to get it, the bottom line is you're NOT wearing it and enjoying it. It could bring in a nice chunk of cash.

I really wish you the best. Please keep us posted

Sorry to hear about your situation. I hope for the best to come to you. Best of luck!

I think you should sell the GMT, follow by Sub LV and a third the black daytona. Keep the one that has sentimental value. You can always buy another zenith daytona but you can never get back the one with sentimental value. Then again, i really wont value much on sentimental value for a watch i jump thru hoops to acquire so maybe the white one will go instead of black.

So sorry to hear about your situation and I'm sure it is just a lull and that you will bounce back even stronger!

If it was me, I would sell the easiest to replace, so it would go this way.

1. GMTIIC
2. Z Serial Daytona
3. Sub LV
4. T Serial Daytona

Good luck in whatever you decide!

Sell three...keep one to wear

Sell three...your choice. Financial existence is way more important and will make you feel better than any watches. Keep the gmt iic, then if worse comes to Worse you can sell it later if needed. Just be pAtient while selling ao you don't lose too much in the sales...

Sorry to hear about your job situation, but who knows, you may land something better in Thailand! About, your watches, I would keep the one with your initials and sell the rest. Or if you need the most funds out of them, then sell them all and buy a "Pre-Loved" Exp-II. Good luck in Thailand.

Astro.
