Icon2 "Those ain't Rolex diamonds... what the $%^& you done to that?"

Not sure there are many (if any) Hip Hop fans that post here, but I was listening to some of Jay Z's old music from the late 90's the other day, and he says the line in the thread title.... so I did a bit of digging and it turns out Jay Z is a huge WIS. He has quite a few other references to Rolex's in his rhymes - "traded in the gold for the platinum Rolex's" etc - I just found that quite interesting. Also it turns out he's a big fan of AP, so much so, he created a line of watches with them:

Quote:
We mentioned a couple of months ago that Damon Dash was starting his own watch line. Now ex-partner Jay-Z has partnered up with Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet. The watches will cost between $24,000 and $100,000. There is a limited edition of 100: 50 in stainless steel; 30 in rose gold; and 20 in platinum. Jay-Z has long been a fan of the brand, even including the name of the watch in the lyrics to one of his songs. Each watch also comes with a specially engraved iPod with Jay-Z's albums already uploaded to celebrate Jay-Z's ten years in the music business.

Pretty cool!!

October 2005! This was the issue that started my Rolex binge. I used to wear Movado's when I stumbled across this issue at Barnes & Noble. Yazo thanks for posting this and having a kid reminiscence on how the Rolex craze started for me. Feels like I am reliving my youth at the time all I had was a dollar and a dream ala lotto... I love this effing site!

I've always been a huge Jay-Z fan. I didn't know he was so into watches until I read the WatchTime article. Pretty cool. Obviously he can buy any watch he wants, but its interesting that he is actually into watches.

Me neither! Plus the fact that AP made him his own one of one watch is pretty crazy!

Yazo,

Like he said in the lyric of his hit jam '30 Something', "I don't got the bright watch, I got the right watch". He means what he spits.

Pretty neat. I heard him say something about a platinum Rolex on SNL. Thanks for the article Yazo.

Off the top of my head...
On the "American Gangster" album he spits a line about "I got watches I ain't even seen in weeks" (forgot the song and maybe the lyrics are wrong).

Maybe I am misinterpreting, but on the track "Hello Brooklyn", Jay raps "I only rolexus" which I understood to mean I only roll lexus" [ie, cleverly combining rolex and lexus into a single pairing with the same meaning]

I'm a huge hip-hop head...........Guru said it best in a line from "Just To Get A Rep":

".........give up the Rolex watch or you won't see another day."

That's from 1990!!

dude i was in a vip party with jayz in 2008 in new orleans and he was wearing a radiomir panerai and everyone was saying that his watch was "whack" because he wasnt wearing bling. But it WAS new orleans the originators of the term "Bling Bling" LOL . I then talked to him about watches and he said the only jewelry he really likes for himself was a watch. everything else he wears is just "for the show" I am from New Orleans and i have to say this guy is really an intelligent fellow and a real watch purist.

One of my favorites if from Can I Live on his first album, Reasonable Doubt.

You guessed it, manifest it in tangible goods
Platinum Rolexed it, we don't lease
we buy the whole car, as you should

I saw some picture of him once wearing that Day-Date Masterpiece w/ meteorite dial, diamond bracelet, etc. Nice to see a rapper with his real teeth and a non-Jacob-the-Jeweler watch.

Jay Z is a huge watch guy and very involved with APs, Vacheron and Breguets. He has a very close relationship with Audemars Piguet and the limited edition Jay Z comes with a signed back, a personalized iPod loaded with his top tracks up to 2005 and a special limited edition box. If I am not mistaken they made 20 in platinum, 50 in SS and 30 in Rose Gold. If you pay attention to the lyrics on "Off That" he talks about Audemars Piguet been so yesterday because he has been wearing APs since the 90s. Also on one of Beyonce's videos she's laying in bed with 10 to 15 APs on her arms and around her.

I've always been more of a Pac fan. Jay-Z never did it for me. It's cool that he's into watches though.
