Limewire now offers their "Pro" version whereby when you download their software, you also download AVG Anti-Virus. The Pro version claims to offer safer downloads in less time. Can anyone speak to the safety of this? Is anyone currently using this service? I'd appreciate any feedback.

Any P2P site can give you a virus. I would be very cautious useing that.

Vulnerabilities in P2P software can be exploited like another other service.

P2P software also can expose personal data on your computer if misconfigured.

Unless you really have a need for it, I'd recommend steering clear of it.

I agree, Limewire is notorious for viruses. I get mine all from Amazon.com because I have a blackberry and never have trouble.

I would personally be careful about Limewire, whether it is Pro or otherwise doesn't make a great deal of difference. Pro is just said to be faster, but it doesn't seem to provide any safeguard against viruses.
Limewire on an Apple Mac, Linux or Unix machine may provide a greater degree of protection as they are not subject to the same level of vulnerability as Windows machines.

Thanks guys for the feedback. As of this entry, I have almost 1300 songs sitting in my iTunes library. Of the 1300, approximately 1000 are from my own CDs and 300 were purchased; 80% from iTunes and 20% from Amazon. The reason I had hoped to download Limewire was to access songs that are not available from these regular sources. After reading your feedback, I can see that it's not worth the risk. Thanks again!

There is no way in Hades that I would download P2P software. Do a search of how child porn distributors hijack your computer to act as a repository for images via P2P software.

P2P Software...Avoid at all costs.
The last guy I knew with it, had 156 viruses/trojans on his system.
An open invitation for real trouble.

I have built a virtual machine just for p2p stuff.
I take a snapshot before the p2p session, then download the stuff, and revert the snapshot back to original. No virus, no trojans. :-)
