Security Concerns

You guys may think this is lame for me to bring up, but I'm dying of curiosity.

If you had a Rolex that retailed for over $20k and you were looking to wear the watch as a daily watch, would you be at all concerned about your own security and safety?

Even knowing that you would be staying within the decent middle class to upper-middle class boundaries of society, keeping a routine of eating in the same places and visiting the same places all the time, people are bound to notice the value of such a watch every once in a while.

How would you deal with this? Would this factor alone deter you from the watch altogether?

Nope, I would not give it a second thought... Most do not notice watches to begin with... I prefer SS so its not an issue for me but I would think unless you just happen to be in the wrong location at the wrong time you would be alright.

x1000 This is exactly what I think too...I wouldnt worry about wearing it in my home town especially when I know exactly where I go and who I meet...And who is going to notice it anyways..With my few years ownership of Rolex I was asked only once...SS is what I prefer though..

get it insured !

NO WATCH is worth losing life or limb for. most homeowner insurance carriers readily insure time pieces....just hand it over, IF they are armed appropriately. IF NOT, kick hia ass up and down the street........

I have a Yachtmaster II and only wear it on specific occasions where I will be going somewhere that I know is safe. If I am going out to places that have a lot of random people or not so great parts of town I stick with the GMT II or something like it.

x2.

The answer would still be no even if this weren't the case. You're just as likely to get mugged for a $2,000 watch as you are for a $20,000 watch.

Agree. I do the same.

No place really is "safe". I will get insurance for my new Rolex (arriving today) as I have for the rest of my collection of watches. Losing a watch won't be a big deal if I have insurance. Losing your life over one, however, is a pretty big deal. That's why I choose to carry.

Wow thats cool Johnny80s.

I value all of your feedback. Fear alone would not sway my overall decision one way or another on a watch. I've already lived a lot of great years. Maybe thats how I should look at it.

There are two separate issues: 1) fear that the watch will increase the likelihood of assault by a thief, and 2) fear of the loss of property worth $20K.

I don't think anyone should wear a watch so expensive that the prospect of its loss is a source of anxiety.

As for attracting the attention of thieves, that's less to do with dollar values and more to do with appearances (the watch's and yours). If I thought a G-Shock was going to get me mugged, I wouldn't wear it, regardless of how cheap it was.

As with anything, use common sense, of course.

... and there is no Grand Jury in Texas that would see any wrong in ridding the State of one more criminal.

As long as you and the criminals believe that, we are all good!

Better that than the laws in other states where they "KNOW" you aren't carrying.

Either way, it's a watch, they are insured, not worth my life over metal.

We have had these threads before about "over my cold dead body", "they'll get six in the gut" etc, again, it's a WATCH... no reason to not see my family or hug my wife over a Rolex! You put a gun to my head, you get whatever Rolex I have on. I call the police then the insurance company - then my AD! :-)

I guess at one time a $3K watch did the same. Anything of value should raise a concern being worn or owned, cars, etc.

Not really, but I've never owned a Rolex over 20k. I owned a few Pateks, a Lange, and a very dressy JLC at one point (sold because it came close to becoming a safe queen) which were over 20k, but were very low profile so I never encountered that problem.

I am not here to spend your money but insurance on watches and other jewelry is the best check I write every year!
It's not just mugging, it's house break-ins, fire, damage, loss while traveling etc. Peace of mind knowing that my watches and other jewelry are replaceable.

Just my thoughts, to each their own.
