Icon5 Will drilled lug series appreciate faster?

All things being equal, do you think lug hole sports models (sub, gmt, exp) will appreciate in value more than no-hole lugs in the long run?

Just curious about member's thoughts/insights on this. If there is already a thread on this please let me know. Thanks for your input in advance.

lug holes add nothing to the value to the watch, some people like it, some prefer without it. regardless, most common Rolex models have now been produced in such large numbers that you wouldn't really count on them for value appreciation. Buy what smiles at you.

Good point. Though overtime will there be fewer drilled-hole models on the market than non-hole models in say 10 years time. That was one reason I thought the drilled models may be more collectible (hence valuable) in the longer term. There will be fewer of them. As you say, personal preference trumps value for most. The no-holes smile at me. Thanks.

I like the lug holes. Besides I am under the impression that the band is more secure with a watch that has lug holes. I may be wrong though.

Although myself prefer a lug hole case cannot see any modern day Rolex appreciate in value, just to many of them around ,whether lug holes or without.Rolex watches will hold there price well compared to many other brands out there. With many models the change since 1988 has been quite small. The SEL bracelet the most beneficial the others just purely cosmetic so must be quite a few million watches like Subs ,SD, GMTs, and DJs around with and without lug holes.

Lug holes and SELs are my personal preference, and those things were a big part of the decision factor when I bought my Y serial 16710 and the E-II. I like the fact that I can use longer spring bars in a case with lug holes, as well as the fact that the center tube is longer. As far as the SELs are concerned, I like the no rattle factor. My choice, but I bought them because I liked the features.

No doubt the best of both, Mark.

Yes ... on drilled hole watches you will make a profit in about 250yrs compared to non-drilled, in which case it would take about 300yrs for a decent profit...

In todays economy, and the forseeable decades, and given these Rolexes are mass production, forget about appreciation of value in your lifetime.... if you can get your $$ out without a loss, consider yourself lucky....those days of appreciation are long gone....

Only lug hole case that will appreciate is on plexi references IMHO.

As has been stated, so many of each type in each model have been produced I doubt they will go for a premium in the future...Btw, I bought my watch to wear and use not because I thought it would go up in value in the future!!!

Have agree Rolex watches are for wearing and not always about making a appreciate profit.

Lugholes means pre 2003 watches...roughly speaking.

By no means an indicator of a rare watch.

IMO thinking the watch may appreciate or hold its value only helps the business case for the next purchase with the boss. Thanks to all for your input. As a someone who has recently caught the rolex bug these perspectives are all helpful.

what you like is the only thing that matters. i like lug holes because it's easier to change the bracelet.
