Sub / SD

Buying either the the SS Sub or SD, ready any day now. Leaning towards SD, not that I will go that deep in the water. However, want something other than what I see on every other wrist, not a huge fan of the cyclops and generally like the more rugged version of things I purchase. Having stated, looking for comment on following;

Have been to 2 AD's in NY and 1 AD in NJ, none move on prices. Also happen to work within sight of the Diamond District in NY where it seems there are plenty of "grey market" watches available. So, the price spread is as follows: New @ $5300 / Gray Market unworn w/ papers, etc.. @ $ 4200-4500 and used in like new shape w/ no doc's @ $3750. All seem to be genuine rolex and what you pay seems to depend on what you want. My question, is it $2000 value to have papers? I assume if I walk into any AD with a genuine Rolex they would work on it, refurbish down the road? Is it the 2 year warranty for the $2K.

I realize the relationship with an AD can reap some less tangible benefits over time. My first Rolex, don't mind spending the cash if its best overall value. Would like opinions please, especially since I found what appears to be a nice example from 2005 for @ $3,500 undocumented other than from Seller, who is established just not AD.

I would just pay the extra $$$ and get one from an AD. My AD didn't budge on my two purchases either, but there are guys on this forum who have recieved discounts on their Rolexes, so I guess it all depends on the AD and how bad they want to sell you a watch. But I certainly would not get a Rolex from a grey market dealer- never.

Picking up my brand new,AD stamped certificate Sea-Dweller,this afternoon ... $4453,cash (Price here remained the same but the local currency strengtened,against the $) A week ago it was $4400 in $ terms.

You have to search for the best deal.The best value is there,its up to you to find it ... Its part of the Rolex experience.

Sub or Dweller,is a good buy.

Wow, I'm really surprised that the AD's in NY won't budge on these things.

I agree on purchasing from an AD rather than on the grey market. It's the piece of mind.

I would strongly advise you to make sure you work out a full refund deal with the grey market dealer (should you choose to buy grey market), so that you can take the watch over to Rolex Headquarters in downtown NYC, have one of their professionals pull that watch apart and verify that everything is legitimate. I believe them just pulling that watch apart will cost you $200. Not only that, you'll feel anxious, and maybe even stressed from the point that you drop the money at the dealer to the point where the Rolex watchmaster gives you the final report on the authenticity of the watch.

Is all this stress worth saving $800?

I'd start by calling Rolex USA in NYC and ask them what do they charge to verify the authenticity of one of their watches and how long does the process take.

Then you'll have to ask the dealer if he/she's willing to do this with you.

My understanding also is that if you take the SD over to Rolex USA and they find out the watch is a conterfeit, BY LAW THEY CAN SEIZE THE WATCH FROM YOU.

Now your final recourse is going to court and fighting with the grey market dealer who won't refund your cash cause you can't give him the watch back all on the account that it was seized by Rolex USA.

You have to weigh all these options my friend.

PS; Excellent choice going for the SD. That's my one and only Rolex also

Since you said your near the diamond district, I would recommend talking to some of those wholesalers they can probably find you a Rolex at a wholesale price. I did it this way through a friend and got a great deal on my TT Daytona

Most non cyclops fans opt for the SS Sea-dweller Date.

that in NJ, at least on the Sub, I visited 5 AD's and all quoted me 10% off. One of them even tried to sell me the SD because she had no SS Sub's in stock and that was also 10% off. Email me [email protected] for details. The AD I finally chose was in Bergen county and they are great and the watch guy is pleasant and very knowledgeable, he came recommended from a member @ TZ. I'd go for the SD, and just beacuse the local ones won't budge on the price, doesn't mean you won't get one discounted. Also, Rolex USA won't confiscate a watch purchased from a grey market dealer...

I cannot for one moment think that NY can give the largest discounts.Their rent must be through the roof !! ...and sorry to say,but this .. "The AD may only give such and such a discount",is complete rubbish !! I dont believe it.Its just about what profit margin they are happy with.Rolex do come around,but its more to see how many the AD is selling,rather for how much it is selling.Rolex already made their profit when they sold it to the AD.Why should they care what the AD sells it for ?? Anyway,where do the Grey dealers get there stock from ,anyway ? Its from the ADs ... !!!

Thanks for the comments. Hit another AD today and still no sight of discount offerings. May have to hit jimbones AD in North Jersey or go Gray - unworn with papers? Staying in the city tommorow night and will be poking around Saturday for new watch.

I did however get to try on the new GMT with ceramic bezel. Was a version in SS / YG with black face. Looked better in the case than on my wrist. Didn't like the green hand with the YG to be more specific. For $8900 I would rather go SS Datejust with blue face (which I suprisingly was very attracted to when trying on today for first time) and a more utilitarian weekend watch.

Anyone know if any changes to Sub are in store in near future??

This whole thing is getting out of hand, feel like I am on the edge of buying 3 or 4 watches to satisfy every craving...The saga continues.

Which AD's did you try in NY?

I've bought several Rolex's in L.A., from Rolex dealers, and never gotten any kind of discount. The line they give you goes like this:
"Rolex does not allow their dealers to give any kind of discount on their watches. If it comes to their attention that a dealer is giving discounts, Rolex will close out their account and not ship any more watches."
I actually believed this for a long time. I have come to realise that these dealers simply are doing what most dealers do, i.e. deliver a line of bull along with the watch...
