Criticism

I’m not sure if this question has ever been asked, but has anyone ever criticized you for wanting/owning a Rolex. If so, what is your story?

As you may or may not know, I do not own a Rolex. But I hope to own one within one year. I decided to share my newly found passion for Rolex with family and friends. It turns out that there was only one person who encouraged me to make a future purchase. My one and only, my dearest Mother! But she may be biased because she too has an affinity for quality craftsmanship.

One of my friends went as far as to tell me that I cannot afford one, and that I was being ridiculous for wanting to spend so much money on a watch. Well, he was right about one thing, I currently cannot afford one, but I total disagree with his last statement. I guess he is just one of those people who cannot appreciate something of fine quality and precision craftsmanship.

No one has ever criticized me besides my mom Then again I've only just gotten my first one for about a week and a half. She was ok with 1 watch but she wasnt pleased when I told her 1 wasnt enough .

Quote "You need to find yourself a wife soon that will manage your money better than spending it on watches."

Oh almost forgot, I've had adults tell me that Rolex is way too old for me when they hear I want one. They say I should wait til im at least in my late 20s to get rolex. I should stick with the "cheaper hip cool brands" like tag while I'm young. I just respond telling them I'll grow into the rolexes then :)

x2 Hahaha!

My parents were very suspect of my plan to buy a Rolex. They saw it as a waste of all my hard-earned savings. However, since I was paying for it, they consented.

On the flip side, my age 30s second cousin told me not to buy a Rolex simply because, "If you buy one now, what will you ask for as a wedding gift!?" He wears a TAG most places and a DateJust on special occasions.

I don't live in the richest area (and town) around, but I try to be modest about my financial state, especially considering the economy. So my friends don't bug me about my car, house, etc., and I doubt they'll care much about my watch either provided I explain my silly WIS-ness!

Both my parents are Rolex owners, and were just too happy that I finally earned myself a nice watch.

The problem started on my subsequent Rolex purchases. It's not that my mom is against multiple watch ownership. She just can't seem to see the differences between my watches! It's always, "Why do you keep buying the same watch?"

I've heard this from my sister too, Ritchie!

I just keep telling her that I'm buying all the watches now before my future wife makes me stop.

My Dad told me in a joking way that his $200 Seiko kept better time than my Rolex.

I replied with "how would you rather get to where you want to go; in a Buick or a Bentley?"

He just laughed.

You sound like you're making a perfectly logical plan to own a treasured fine Swiss timepiece.
As long as you're true to yourself follow your passions, the critics be damned.

There's an AllState (US Auto Insurance brand) commercial where there's a guy explaining why he got his Fine Swiss Timepiece that has a sour tone, too. As if to say "why in times like these would you spend THAT kind of money on THAT??!!"

To them I say - everybody has to have a dream or a goal. Mine is a shiny new Rolex!

And by the way, my wife criticizes me daily about wanting a Rolex - even though she wears a Lady TT DJ! I think it's more poking fun than anything...

Those commercials are hilarious! It's damast steel the same kind they use in sword making then he holds his wrist up and does a sly grin. Makes me laugh everytime it reminds me of one of my cousins why he likes luxury items. EDIT it's an acura commercial i am thinking about.

:r ofl: Yeah I guess all maxi dial watches look the same to a non rolex fan. I remember how I used to Sub, SD, GMT were all the same watch then I was like why would people buy the watches that look so similar.

People who don't share your passion -- whatever it is -- will find something to criticize. As was so eloquently stated above...screw 'em! It's your money so as long as you don't buy a Rolex while at the same time asking Mom for lunch money, you're good. My Dad gave me some @#$% when I spent $325 on a gold neclace. Twenty-six years later, I still have the neclace (tho I thankfully no longer wear it) and think about my Dad flapping his gums every time I look at it. Fond memories. I'm sure that we can all think of countless examples of "paying too much for something". $8K for a bicycle; $600K for a car; $500 for a bottle of Scotch; several million dollars for a painting by some dead guy...blah, blah, blah. In the words of the immortal God of sneakers, Phil Knight, "just do it!"

I think it's an Acura commercial...

where the man says his watch is made of fine Damascus steel, the same material that they use to make swords. It's on YouTube if you haven't seen it and it is very funny for self-deprecating WISs.

I am oddly calm after my July purchase of a Rolex GMTIIC in SS. We'll see how long this lasts.

Mother approved of having one good watch, but when announcing my intention to purchase a second... it didn't go over well.

The following ensued:

Me: "How many pairs of shoes do you own?"
Her: "A few"
Me: "More than twenty though right"
Her: "Well that's a personal matter"
Me: "If the house was burning down, and you could only save one pair, which would it be"
Her: *pause*
Her: "Well I could carry more than one pair in a hurry"
Me: "You see my point though"
Her: "No its not the same thing at all, I need my shoes, you don't need your watches"
Her: *gets cross walks away*

This isn't to suggest that pointing out hypocrisy is an appropriate way to deal with female disapproval of your purchases, but if she's your mother, she can't divorce you, and it will at least get her off the subject.

That's funny. Tell her in a life or death situation i could pawn off my rolex to survive. How are shoes going to save your life? Wasn't it said somewhere that the universal currencies in this world are Cash, Gold, and Rolex?

i agree with many, but thinking from the other perspective, the people who criticized you were probably just concerned. you should tell them how you are planning to acquire your rolex as it is one of your goals. i am sure they'd understand.

yeah, my peers make fun of me wearing a rolex. i tell them that i could always sell the watches and get the money back. i don't lose money on any of them. it's like i get to wear a rolex for free! why not?

Who's business is it but yours as to what watch you want to wear?,. or for that matter they are way out of line telling you what you can and cannot afford, afterall it is YOUR money and you shouldn't rely on your friends to tell you how you should or should not spend it !

I don't care what anyone says about my watches. I know that I have a good handle on my finances and that's all that matters.
