New watch - 16660
Our good buddy Steve M had been looking for a GMT-II Fat Lady for me, but hadn't been pleased with what he was finding. I mentioned to him off hand that I'd be interested in seeing any SDs he might have, and he hooked me up! It just arrived today!
I had been admiring 16660s, and this was a great opportunity to grab one. It's an 8.3M serial (~1984) and should have a matte dial, but it was likely swapped during a service and has a gloss wg-surround dial. Steve is looking for a nice matte to swap in, but for now I am in love. The case, bracelet, and bezel assembly are in fantastic shape, and the watch is running like a top. I love the open date wheel, as you can see the 9 is open... an oft overlooked difference between the 16660 and the 16600. |

Super score you got there, dude.
I'm a sucker for deep patina. That one looks great! Congrats! |

That patina is soooo nice, I might leave the dial alone if it were mine. It looks beautiful and all the tritium matches perfectly. Is it possible it's just an early version of that dial with the wg markers? Even if it's a RSC service replacement dial, it's still correct and looks great.

Thanks! I also love the dial and might keep it that way. The SN is too early for it to have had gloss from the factory.
I am thinking even if I don't swap it right away, it is smart to at least buy a matte dial now while prices are being impacted by the economy. |

You'll be crushed when you realize that loose matte 16660 dials are weirdly very, very scarce. Perversely, this makes the matte 16660 dial probably the most expensive on the secondary market in relation to the value of the entire watch. Really, you're looking at a dial that approaches upwards of 50% of a complete triple 6.

He is looking, and if anyone can find one for me it's him. Fortunately, I'm not in a rush since the watch is so nice in its current form. |

$2K would be cheap IMO. You just don't see much of any legit matte 16660 dials out there. Last listing I saw on VRF for a less than perfect one at $2200 sold quickly with multiple inquiries. Darndest thing IMO.

Most think up to 8.6M is still okay for matte, and Steve personally thinks up to 9M. Also, the Rolex serial number project has many later SNs that are reported as being original and matte.
Like I said, $2K to $3K and I know they are rare. Again, if it takes a year or even 2yrs to get one I wouldn't mind. |

Dude, I'm glad you posted this. I always thought I'd rather have a triple six with a matte dial and bleach white tritium markers, but this has to be one of the nicest surround dials I've ever seen. The beautiful contrasting patina really makes it come alive with character. I'm not sure I'd want to swap the dial either.
Nice watch! -M |

Nice looking triple 6. Wouldn't mind having one myself. Congrats!

When the opportunity arose to get the one on the left, I couldn't turn it down even though I already had the one on the right. Perfect dial with snow white markers, and box & punched paperwork. It's basically brand new in terms of overall condition. Looking at the pic of yours does remind me I should've picked up a 16660 with the metal surrounds and lovely patina I was offered recently. Though I'm somewhat biased, I do believe they're really underpriced on the secondary market and should see some nice upside in the next 5 years.

Very nice Fat Lady! I decided not to get one right now. I got the 16660 last week and my PAM 359 this week (crazy timing), so I'm done for a while. |
