Ok guys here is my situation. I have 6 days off a month, two saturdays which I cherish and 4 sundays. The reason I mention my schedule is because I can not wear a watch to work so I only have 6 days when I can wear a watch. This being said I own more than 6 watches and some will get lucky to be worn once in a whole month.

This got me thinking I should slim my collection down and possibly go after a grail or something I really want. Believe it or not I sold 12 watches in the past 2 months already. But to be honest I love all my current watches and enjoy just looking at them from time to time. So I guess my first question is, is it a waste to own these watches and not even wear them?

So here is my dilemma, I am considering selling most of my collection to pursue a meters first 1680 Red Sub. This to me, would be a grail. So this would mean I would have to part ways with my 14060 obviously, V serial GMTIIC, MKII speedy, Grand Seiko Hi Beat and add some cash as I refuse to sell my Speedmaster Professional 3572.50, a watch I hope to keep forever and pass on. So my second question is, would you sell these watches to help fund a Sub 1680 Red or if you own one are you happy with it?

Finally am I the ideal candidate for a 3-4 watch guy? I am thinking 1680 red, 1655 Explorer, Speedy Pro 3572.50 and WG or Zenith or PN Daytona as my life long pursuit of grails before I die. If I got the 1680 red sub I would almost be half way there and I believe am yet to be half through my life so.....

Anyhow I guess I am on the fence and was curious to see what fellow members had to say about my current situation. Here are some photos of my collection. Thanks everyone and have a great weekend

First , great watches. I am in a similar position, I can only wear a certain few because of my type of work and I own very many, every time I think of selling them off, I start thinking of why I have them in the first place. I enjoy watches, I like to look at them, wear them, wind them, clean and polish them. I am a collector and we collectors don't always use the items we collect. I also collect antique firearms and would not think of using some of them even though most are fully capable. Keep them admire them and add to them, eventually you will be in a position to use them all and you may regret thinning them out now.

You need to simply do what makes you happy! Regardless of what anyone else thinks you need to live with the decision. I just sold off my 2nd Rolex because I found myself wearing one over another all the time. I kept thinking that I had alot of money just sitting on a winder for no reason. I decided 1 Rolex was enogh for me and I sold my DJ and bought a less expensive Tag to kick around in on the weekends. Sometimes I regret it but hey, for now it's good! I think 2-3 watches is good but some like more, some like less!

If I really wanted the Red Sub, I'd find one of the modern ones to hang on too and sell the rest.

Just be careful, and give a lot of thought to what you want to keep and go for it.

I too had a big collection of watches and used to wear one a day and it took a couple of weeks for a full rotation. But just like that one day I decided that its just a lot of money sitting around, and since I keep my watches at home, its also dangerous. I now have a single watch that I wear daily. Every 6-8 months (or whenever I get the urge) I sell it and get another model I like, etc.. Don’t think I could own more than one luxury watch at the same time anymore..

But as others said, go with the option that keeps you happy ;)

I say keep them...

I toy with going Vintage, but really...Do I want to sell off watches to acquire a piece which may or may not have a dubious pedigree? So hard to tell. Then do I want to worry about wearing the watch and having the lume falling off the hands of a 1680 which has the matching Patina I (thought) wanted so badly?

Today, I say no to a 1680. I prefer the variety of my more modern collection. That's my opinion.

Love your watches btw. I am thinking I may want to replace the Speedy I sold this year!

Thanks everyone for the input, although I do not see myself ever being a one watch guy I think thinning down the collection is the best choice. I will probably consider selling some of my pieces at the end of the year giving me enough time to change my mind possibly... Lol. If I pursued the 1680 Red I would be sure to use Steve M on our forum to ensure authenticity and quality.

Hey David... I had to make the same decision as you recently. What it really boiled down to for me was whether or not to go vintage. After much though I decided to consolidate and go vintage. I'm on the hunt right now but I don't think I've made a bad choice as NO AMOUNT of modern Rolex's will give me the pleasure and satisfaction of owning a DRSD or 6263. What I realized about myself is I like to own the rare and that just isn't there for modern.

Good luck on your decision buddy - we'll have lots to talk about @ the GTG in Sept!

Multiple watches dosen´t equal happiness........I think you are on the right path if you are forced to only one watch at work.

I sold my LV and 3 other watches to fund this 1680 Red.....and have never looked back. I use it almost every day.....for work, party, traveling and swimming....

It appears we have a lot in common as I too prefer to own something that everyone doesn't have or have trouble getting. I recently purchased the GmtIIC and I am regretting the purchase as I hate the PCL's and the easy availability of the watch. I think vintage is the route for me.

I am very excited about out September meet up and it appears we will have a decent showing. If your saying you already own a DRSD then Omg please wear to the meet!

you stated in you original OP that you would eventually like to have a certain number of watches and certain number of grails within that collection. It seems to me that if you are asking this question you can see yourself with only your final list as the ultimate collection for you.

With that being said, you need to make the first leap of faith and go after your goals. If that means selling a few watches in order to reach your final goal, it shouldn't be an issue. I say "go for it", it will free up cash and make your goal less cluttered in your mind, it will be a step in the right direction. Then you can enjoy your 6 days off wearing one of your grails and bank some money until you are ready for your next grail. Best of luck, a Meters first Red Sub on my wrist would keep me satisfied for a looooooooong time...

I don't have either............... yet :-)

I went up this weekend to a shop in PA to look @ a MKIV DRSD.... it was STUNNING... domed crystal... patina... full set box and PUNCHED papers!

I was really close to closing the deal on the spot but a little voice in my head told me to hold on for a 6263.. which I'm working on taking a look at also. So we'll see.

I'd like to have something set in stone in Sept as I'm getting married in Oct and want either/or in my wrist!

Your watches look great!

I would sell them to get the one you really want especially if you are only wearing it a few times a month.

You have a nice collection David, but considering that you can't wear them while at work, you may find that you get more enjoyment from FEWER pieces. Sometimes, less IS more.

I'd suggest paring down slowly and once you're ready....one by one. Think about which one or two you'd be 100% happy wearing for the foreseeable future and go for it!!!

I'm in your similar situation, but I wear watches everyday, however I'm still thinking of "slimming" down my collection into a "few grails" that I would like to wear from time to time... :)

x2. However, it is hard to just let a watch go as I have gotten attached to each one. Each was a acquired for keeps but it's gotten a little out of hand.

Go with your heart. I know it's not that easy letting a watch go. Best of luck and hope you get the watch on your must have list real soon.

Such a tough call David that only you can really make the final choice on.....

If thinning the collection to acquire a stunner like the red Sub or DRSD will forefill the desire,then I say go for it!!!
Personaly I couldn't part with a major chunk of my collection but that's me....

If this is the "grail rotation" you are aiming at, your decision to flip is going in the right direction IMHO.

I quit wearing all my "lesser" watches after a few months of owning my Explorer. I couldn't possibly get rid of them, even the broken ones, unless I were to part with them as gifts.

If you love watches, you just love watches and how often they're worn is irrelevant.

If you referring to the G shock Frogman DW8200 I will never let this one go as the Frogman has 17 years of diving history and believe it or not this watch is the reason I began joining watch forums because I could not find the watch any where else for sale, hence my member name Frogman4me

I've bought and sold over the years and the ONLY way, in my opinion, to know what you really love is to own it for a while......
Sell them all and go for the watches you REALLY want....You can always sell those and buy these back should you be unhappy...
But if you never try you'll never know.....

I've bought and sold over the years and the ONLY way, in my opinion, to know what you really love is to own it for a while...... Sell them all and go for the watches you REALLY want....You can always sell those and buy these back should you be unhappy... But if you never try you'll never know..... Hope that helps....
