Me and my wife were at the local AD last night seeing if they have anything new come in (they actually did). I notice that the two Explorer II watches (white dial, black dial) are both still gone since they sold them a while back. So, I say "I see you haven't got any new Explorers in."

So then the AD says, "Nope. Actually you don't want one of those. That watch is for those people that just want to say they have a Rolex."

I give a rather loud, "HMM" then a long pause, "I don't get it. Thats a pretty decent watch. And I was considering that one as my next Rolex." Then I continued looking at other models and having my wife try on some.

I swear some ADs can be such morons (no offense to our TRF member GMT Master). I really like the look of the Explorer II and what it represents. It seems like more of a "rugged" watch than most (even we can probably IMO wear any Rolex in any circumstance). I like the bezel (though not rotateable) and the red 24 hour hand, which looks good against a white or black dial.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but it seems the AD was saying that the Explorer II was a "low end" or "entry level" watch. I really took offense to this. I hope to own this watch in the near future. In fact, I'm hoping to one day summit Mt. Everest and proclaim at the top, "For Sir Hillarrrrrrry!" with my raised Explorer II in the air. If not that, then at least a minor peak in the Rocky Mts will do.

Is there something about the Explorer II I don't know about???

It's the AD's version of "Do you want fries with that?"

I think a new EII is coming out next spring. That may or may not influence your decision to get the current model.

I for one have also been eying an Explorer II in white face, I think it is a fine watch and also gives you 24hr time feature as well.

BTW, I wish you the best of luck if you head off on an expedition to Everest, that would be quite an accomplishment and quite a drain on the bank account.

Cheers to all the explorers out there, keep heading to the hills, and I will keep venturing to innerspace where no others have ventured. After all, exploring gives me purpose to an otherwise mundane life.

No offence taken I agree, some ADs have some very odd ways of trying to sell their watches. I like the honesty of the Explorer range - it's the very essence of Rolex sports watches, rugged watches that can go anywhere, handle everything, and look damn good doing so. They might not have had the updates of some of the other models, and they're not the biggest selling model in the world, but people appreciate their crisp look and light weight. The Explorer II packs a lot of function into a very discreet watch - I hope the upcoming update doesn't spoil that

I have decided to get an Explorer II with a black dial

I have looked at the used prices and cant quite work out why this watch is so overlooked. If someone could tell me why these seem less desirable that would be good?
In my mind surley if there are less of them around should prices be quite stable?

I think that they are a lovely watch classy looking and seems they are also very wearable daily.

Now I need to find one

I wouldn't be surprised if the ExpII sees a reasonable price uplift on the secondary market over the next couple of years, especially if the new model arrives with Supercase and Superprice.

You can get a very good piece for low-mid £2ks at present.

As for that, it's hard to say really. Maybe it's to do with the fact it's function is so similar to the GMT II - it's easy to overlook the Explorer II next to the bigger, newer and shiner GMT IIc. Maybe the fixed bezel isn't to some people's tastes, or maybe it's not "Rolex" enough (in terms of design) for them. All I know is that it should sell better than it does

Wow... what an interesting response. I know GMT Master would treat his customers better then that. For an AD to say: "you don't want it" about ANY Rolex is pretty amazing, especially since there are cheaper models available.

Anyway, back to your question, the Explorer is an excellent watch! To be honest, I prefer the GMT more, but if there was some circumstance I was able to get an E II I'd jumpt at it!

I think that many misunderstand "The Rolex Community"... In the Internet world, the only models that are seen so often are the ones that somebody can make a quick sale on.. It is not representative of the rest of the world..

Salesmen who work for ADs are just low level employees. Don't expect 1st class service or cultural understanding. Remember you aren't buying a Rolls or a 20 million dollar diamond necklass. An Ex II is in the price range of a used car: don't be surprised if you have to enjoy a "used car buying experience!" lol

Since he didn't have any in stock it automatically becomes the one you should shy away from. However, anything that he does have in stock is the right choice, just buy something today is the message to me.

I tried one on at a local AD the other day. It was really nice, they had a white face and a black face. I don't think it is for people that just want to say that they have a Rolex. Rather, most WIS will want it for it's function and history.....not to mention it's looks!
