Should I buy my 10 month old son a new ceramic sub and give it to him in 20 years? I am talking about not touching it and 'saving' it for him. If not I will always have my own that I'd be able to pass on.

It would be one of the 1st sub-c's released here in Canada too...

Please answer the poll question. I am going to let TRF make this decision for me 100%!!!!!!!!

If you mean your gonna enjoy it, have it serviced and pass it on then I say go for it. But if your gonna just put it in a safe for 20 years then I say no.

I would say no because with today's huge production numbers I don't think any current model will ever be a scarce collectors item, and I don't think the price appreciation will compensate for the lost investment potential of the purchase price over 19 yrs. JMO.

As mentioned, I'd say the watch would have much more meaning to him if it were your watch that carried the memories of him seeing it on you as he grows up.

I've seen countless well-meaning parents give something of high value to young adults and they just sell it to get what they are interested in. That would really hurt your feelings if it happened to you.

So I say buy it for you and journal entries about it. Then leave it to him. even if he doesn't grow up to like watches like you, he'd love the history.

When I turned 18 my dad gave me his 1966 T-Brid convertible, it did not run and needed some body work and I was never a big car guy so like a douche bag I sold it never thinking that it would hurt my dad.

Now that I am older I wish I could go back in time and slap myself!

I agree. At the age of ten months, you can't know whether he's going to be a WIS or not. I know adults who don't wear any watch at all.

Heck, I didn't want or own my first Rolex until after I was 30! Before that if it told time and looked cool I was good to go. "That's a great looking Armani watch for only $350!"

wear it and enjoy it and then MAYBE give it to him....A lot can happen in 20 years......Only one of my three boys (The youngest being 20) would wear a watch if I gave them one...The other two wouldn't be interested.....Thank goodness.....

Safer I would have thought to put aside/invest the money in an account for him.

I vote no. Better idea: put the purchase price in its own "watch account," invest it, and buy something then with the money. I bet you'll come out ahead. Besides, a 20-year-old Rolex is better than no Rolex at all, but I'd still prefer a new one.
