Why a Submariner?

Many of you who own Submariners aren't divers, so why do you choose the Sub? If it's the look, why not choose a GMT II? It looks practically the same as a Sub, and you can still time the parking meter, eggs, steaks on the grill, etc., It also does much more by tracking multiple time zones and the bi-directional bezel is more convenient for timing topside events. With the pre-ceramic versions, you have the option of Pepsi or Coke bezels for added variety.

I'm a diver so the Sub makes sense to me. If I didn't dive, I wouldn't choose the Sub and would probably wear an Explorer or Turn-o-Graph or maybe even a GMT II. Even as a diver I'm thinking more and more about venturing into these land based models.

So curiosity has gotten the best of me....what's so alluring about the Submariner?

I like the cleaner three hand design vs the GMT.

I like the bezel to have minutes, not hours.

I prefer the unidirectional bezel because it's less likely to accidentally rotate, and if it does, I always know which way it rotated. I use this to time insulin injections, so it is pretty important.

I wanted no date.

I have never been diving in my life yet I have 3 divers and a GMT... I cannot tell you what it is, I like everything about the Submariner (looks, feel) everything. My subs are my favorite watches.

I thought I needed a Submariner to wear in the shower

When I think of Rolex I think of a Submariner so for me the Sub is what I wanted...thats it

If by fortuitous acts, the world comes to a nuclear standoff, or some other catastrophe of biblical proportions like the fall of a meteor and suchlike, and everything collapses, EVEN ROLEX FROM GENEVA!, and it'll be years before things come back to normal (if they ever will), there's only one brand of watches I would like to have on my wrist, Rolex.

Was thinking first on an Explorer II... but, knowing that probably much of the food resources will come from the seas, and who knows under which kinds of conditions, the Rolex of choice, for this type of events, most definitively will be...

A Submariner....

Close second, an Explorer II.

I like the GMT but the reason I wear a sub instead is because I find the bezel to be far less busy. The GMT bezel is completely covered in numbers unlike the sub which is a bit more subtle. That's just my preference, I would love to own a GMTII some day though.

When I got into flying, every friggin' pilot had a GMT Master.

I wanted to be different and I just stuck to it. I'd love to get a Coke GMT-M one of these days or an Explorer II.

But the Sub is just SOOOO classic, it's hard to walk away from.

My 1st Rolex was a SS-Sub 1680 in 1977 and the reason is because every year I got a new watch for xmas and by summer they all had water inside even though they all said water-proof or water resistant. I was never a diver simply a swimmer, go figure.

Black on black, simplicity. GMT isn't a bad option, i prefer straight-forward, non-fussy design so the Yachtmaster would be first in front of the GMTIIC.

Subs also have all brushed finished which is more subtle, appropriate and sporty.

They both very nice watches,but the Submariner will allways look clean,smooth and will ever be a classic

you summed it up for me...

that's why i have a gmt and not a sub - despite having originally owning a sub. it soon became apparent to me that the sub was a bit overkill for what i was wanting. my 16710 fits my purposes very well.

Well yes used Sub and SD too but today I would doubt if 90% of all diving type watches ever see water other than perhaps a shower or dip in the pool.

..simply because I like it.

Got my first in 1991, and I am still a fan of the Submariner.

Today, I am happy to own the 116610LN, 16610, 14060 and the 16600 Sea-Dweller, which is very close to the Sub.

I cannot imagine to wear another watch.

I read somewhere that the COMEX divers used to call the SD "CabinDweller", as none of them actually used it (too valuable, apparently).

Anyway, to the OP: no, I don't dive, but the Rolex Submariner is simply an iconic watch: the quintessential Rolex. I don't intend to get a second Rolex, so it had to be the Sub. If I was going to get another, it would be a s/h Pepsi GMT.

The Sub has a universally appealing design that for me, has the slight edge over the GMT because it has a neater bezel.

I own a GMTIIC but even I understand some of the appeal of the Sub. Its the Bond Watch,or the cleaner Bezel,or the fact that it has the divers extension.

The fact is that it offers somethings the GMTIIC doesn't. To each his own.

The GMT II bezel is too cluttered for me. Sub bezel shows more black

Yeah, I've often wondered why non divers prefer the Submariner...I love watersports and think the Sub is THE definitive diver's watch....Met a Royal Marine the other day wearing his new GMT...Didn't know how to use the bezel!!! Don't you just hate that??
