I have recently been left some money by my Grandfather in his will (eternally grateful to him!!) and was thinking of treating myself to (a much lusted after for many years) world famous Rolex.

I love the subs but have currently fallen in love with the GMT II. Although I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with something that size and expensive on my wrist! Although i'm sure I'd get used to it!!

Please help! is there anyone here who has spent ages agonising over their first Rolex purchase?

First of all, I am sorry for your loss. Now, on 'which one' to buy when it comes to Rolex; I would suggest following the most valuable rule: try them on and see which one YOU like. Some people will say a sub, others a DJ or a DD, but in the end, it has to make you smile.

Trust me, one of them will 'sing' to you; that is the one.

You need to visit an AD and try them on. The one that makes your eyes light up and your heart stop, thats the one to buy! If you can afford and like them both, well buy both!

Totally agree, however if it's only going to be one watch then I would say get yourself down to your local AD and try on as many as you can.

Also have a read around on the forums, there is so much information out there, but don't rush into it and pick the one that you want

After you've done some research and you have a general concept of what is acceptable in the looks and the financial departments, the above advice is best.

If you try on every watch in stock, you will find one that fits your criteria.

Hi and welcome to the Forum. Sorry for your loss. I also debated whether to get the Sub Date (older model) or the GMT IIC. After trying them both on, I decided on the GMT for several reasons- a more substantial bracelet, the second time zone, the ceramic bezel, and the over-all dressiness of the watch. I like the polished center links, though this is very contentious on the Forum. But, I still couldn't get the tradional looking Sub out of my minbd, so 6 months after getting the GMT, I got the Sub. So my solution was to get both and I'm very happy with the decision. I suggest that you go to an AD and try them on. You will find that the new Sub ceramic (you probably won't find the older Sub at an AD) is very similar to the GMT ceramic, so it's not a huge choice differential. Good luck.

Thats the best advice, go try them ALL on at an AD or somewhere w/ a great selection. Go bug the sh*t outa a Tourneau and then don't buy anything there haha unless they give you a sweet discount.

Gmt 2c or new sub C are probably going to be models you gravitate towards. Try everything on though.. Take your time. You'll know when you've decided. And most importantly enjoy the hunt.

I always liked the sub and GMTII in pictures.. But everytime I visited the store wanting to buy one, I always endéd with something else.. They're just not as appealing to me as the ones I bought! Hehehe..

So go ahead and have some fun trying them watches on..

For first Rolex, I would seriously consider something less flashy, yet absolute classic - 14060m Sub No Date. But, like all other guys said, best way is to try on some models and choose the one that smiles back on you!

If you are definitely going to buy from a specific place tell them so.

I find that when I say, "I am definitely going to buy a XXX from you; I just need to decide which one" it really makes a difference in the service I receive, even if the decision takes a long time.

your purchase ought to reflect the personality of your grandfather. so, if he was an active individual who felt most comfortable, say, around water, the sub would be a great respectful pick. if he liked the outdoors, travels, i'd suggest the explorer II or GMTIIC, respectively. i hope you get the idea. this is what i would do out of respect- you could ask yourself, what would he wear or what would he want for me... i think the purchase and subsequent ownership would be more worthwhile, just my two cents. i'm sorry for your loss, i've only known 1 grandfather, he's very special and i know that these relationships are special and difficult when conclusion is met.

Whichever model you choose remember it is one you will never ever let go as it will be a reminder of your Grandfather. Be patient with your choice and don't just jump in. Try a few different models on and believe me you will know which is the one for you. My first Rolex was the Submariner 14060 ND 2001 model & I absolutely love it. I will never sell this watch and will be passing this down to my boy when I am gone.

I've been in the same spot as you, and I was absolutely, 100% convinced I wanted a TT blue Sub, when I was shopping on-line.

Then I went to the AD and took a couple out of the case, tried a couple on, and ended up with a TT GMT-II.

Bottom line, you must go to your AD, take a good look at the models in the case, and try on the ones that speak to you. Buy the one that "Fits" you the best.

Take your time, salespeople are used to that, especially in Rolex AD's. I spent a long time just looking at the models back and forth in the case, before I even had one taken out.

And, if none of them really, really stick out as "your" Rolex, see what else they have. It's a lot of money to spend on something frivolous. If you do it right, you'll end up with something you'll have with you for years.

A word of advice from someone with a simalar experiance, take your time in choseing, pick the model you whant, if it is more expensive than the money he left you but its what you whant then put the extra money to it and buy it, because every time you will look at your watch it will remind you of your grandfather and being a rolex it will last you till the day you die and beond, and then you can pass it on in your will and they will allways have the memory of you when they look at the watch............

I wouldn't buy anything right now. Money is tight, everywhere. Especially what I just heard on the news yesterday about cut backs in England. You have plenty of time to buy a Rolex. Invest the money wisely, for a while and let it grow. Then, buy something.

Welcome to TRF. Visit a dealer and try on ALL of the models. Don't limit yourself to a Sub or GMT, even though you might decide on one of those. But, slip on a DateJust, a Yacht Master, an Air King, a Millgauss, or maybe an Explorer. After you decide which will be your first, come back to TRF and get it from one of our trusted resellers.
