Icon19 Good work alternative to Rolex

Guys and Gals,

What watch do you use as an alterative to your Rolex or other fine timepiece for those hands-on work jobs such as cutting grass or other down-and-dirty jobs. I am looking for something that I won't fret over if it gets scratched up, but one that will with stand the abuse it will go through. Any suggestions?

What do you guys think of Tissot? I really like the look of the T-Race T90.4.446.31 with a SS and rubber blend band. I am leaning toward the quartz end for this watch, as I don't want to have to set it every time and I don't plan keeping this on a winder. Has anybody had experience with Tissot?

I ususally take off a Panerai and put a Rolex on to do dirty work. Then there are the Seiko divers (BM, Sam. BLK Knight, WHT Knight) or a few G shocks.

Hard to beat the Seikos.

I own a Tissot and they're good watches but you should really look at the CWs first.

A Ward over a Tissot as a tool watch? Drugs really are bad for a persons brain.

The SEIKO Black Monster:

Tough as nails but a fine timepiece to boot. I recommend getting it on the rubber strap, like I did. It is even tougher that way!

The only watch I have that I know will stand up to any abuse I can give it is any one of my Rollies. I wouldn't even trust my Casios as much.

This is my beater watch. I wore it while tiling my basement floor. Boy did it pick up some scratches. I was able to buff most of them out with a scotch brite pad.
Only paid about $50.00 for it. To my surprise, it keeps very good time with it's Japanese movement.

The Seiko's are a great value. Don't know how scratch resistant the "Hardlex" crystals are though. If you don't mind a non-hacking, non-manual wind movement, the 7s26 is pretty bulletproof. Mine runs unacceptably fast but they're a breeze to regulate. There's also a huge selection of styles in the divers and Seiko 5 line. For an affordable automatic, they are hard to beat for the cost...

Ya I noticed that my SKX007 which has the 7s26 is running a few minutes fast. I had it regulated once, but my son dropped the watch when he was playing with it and I have not been back to the Seiko service center for a regulation.

The SuperOcean (prior to the Avenger like cases) with the Professional bracelet would be good tool watches.

heck you bought the Rolex to wear or look at? And the fact the subs and SD were built to with stand the depth and all hard things fould under the sea, it should with stand the riggers of mowing the lawn or hamering a nail in, it's a rugged watch!

A Chase Durer Special Forces UDT 1000XL in Black: www.chase-durer.com.
One of the nicest watch purchases I have ever made as a watch enthusiast! Great detail, and, extremely hefty with solid SS end links, divers extension clasp, 3 subdials, 60 minute rotating bezel, compass, and, H2O resistant to 1000FT. This watch also comes in a beautiful Burlwood display box and 2 year warranty.

Anything where there is a "realistic" or "likely" chance I might ruin the watch, I would recommend Casio G-shock, not only are they cheap, but they are tough. They have always done well by me in those situations.

I think it all depends on what your outlook on life is and the attitude you have towards your Rolex whether or not you need a daily beater.

A good friend of mine wears a U series Submariner. He has worn it everday of his life since his wife gave it to him for a birthday present 10 yrs ago. He has no other watch that I know of.

He is an electrician and works on construction sites. He exposes the watch to all dust, mud, water, shock (as in banging). When he finishes each day, he just rinses the watch under a tap. The bracelet is scored so much is looks like its made of aluminium. The watch itself looks weathered too, The case has dings all over and the crystal has a few chips in it. He says it keeps very good time.

I once asked him over a beer or two why he wears such an expensive timepiece as an everyday watch in his line of work. He gave me two reasons.

His wife bought it for him and he won't wear anything else.

The other reason he gave was he cannot understand the mindset of folks who buy tough watches and 'molly coddle' them. He said its like these guys who drive around in gleaming imported 4wd (suv) and never take them off the bitumen road and never use them to their full potential by driving through the bush.

In a way, I had to agree with him....... to an extent.

I wear a Rolex for all my heavy work. That's why I own them, because they can take a beating.

When I am not wearing one of the Rolex watches from the collection (usually a Sub), I usually have on one of my Omega Speedmasters.
