Hello gents! With any "major" purchase, I spend months and months learning as much as possible about the product and my first Rolex purchase is no different.

I'm considering a purchase of one of the following:

1) DJ SS Black dial w/ Oyster bracelet

2) DJ SS Turnograph Black dial w/ Oyster bracelet

I'm leaning more towards the TOG because it has a more sporty appearance and will blend well with my normal, daily attire. However, I've read several not so flattering comments on a variety of boards. In fact, a few people have said it's a "poor man's Sub" and have indicated it won't hold its value.

Due to my wrist size, the 36mm looks the best which is why the DJ appeals to me.

However, I need to consider long-term value as well as I don't want to buy a TOG and have the value take a nosedive in the coming years.

Any thoughts or comments are welcome. Thank you for your time.

The TOG is a beautiful watch and is similarly priced or more expensive than a SS sub date (not that it should be important). You should buy whatever you like and not be swayed by other peoples opinions. If I am not mistaken, the TOG is also 36mm and is from the "Datejust" lineup.

You are right on the DJ lineup; TOG might seem larger because of the bezel. You are also VERY right on what to buy. What I would do is go to AD and try them both on; one of them will smile at you, that's the one.

I'm appreciative of the feeling of putting out a large chunk of money for something, only to have it worth a whole lot less after you've acquired it, BUT, that said, if you're trying to protect your investment dollars, a watch, even a Rolex, that's in current production is a pretty poor bet.

What you can count on is both models that you've named are going to depreciate just as soon as it's slapped on your wrist. What you can also count on is Rolex raising its list prices every year or so, and that may mean there will be less of a depreciation hit in future years because of the rising prices, but with either a Datejust or a Datejust TOG, you're not likely to be able to sell it anytime soon for what you paid. Afterall, it's only worth what someone else will pay, not what shows up on the sellers side of the equation.

You can mitigate the depreciation by purchasing preowned. There's a fairly good supply of Datejusts and I've seen some TOG's as well show up on internet vendor sites. You'll just have to do a bit of hunting and have some patience.

Don't draw any conclusions about the popularity or lack thereof of a certain Rolex model by what you read on the boards. If you're going to acquire a Rolex and pay the price for a truly fine timepiece, then go with what you're going to enjoy wearing, not what someone else might think. These Rolex fourms often get populated and stay active with people who've gravitated to certain models and at times the postings can be dismissive of those who're wearing something else. There have been a number of postings on this board, one of the most tolerant of the forums, where people have wondered if the 'Datejust is still popular?' or if the AirKing is about to be phased out or who in their right mind would buy a 34mm Date when the 40mm Sub is available?. It's all conversational noise. Rolex will phase in or out whatever they damn well please, and it will be a business decision. Just because forum contributors advocate and hang with those who are attracted to specific models doesn't mean that in other parts of the world, different models are very popular and contribute greatly to the Rolex, SA bottom line.

Summary: Buy what you'll be happy with for a long time, because with proper care and attention, the Rolex will outlive you.

You are correct - the TOG is 36mm which appeals to me.

Perhaps my first watch will be the TOG and then I'll pick up a classic DJ w/ white face as a dress watch.

As for retaining the watch, I'm not sure why I'm even concerned with the long-term value of the watch since I plan on wearing it until I pass it onto my son as a gift some year in the future.

I just got one of these, and it is my favorite Rolex. The new bracelet and the beefier case is outstanding. You wold not be dissapointed! A true classic. Looks good for sport or dress. Kind of like an Explorer 1 with a date, but actually looks bigger due to new case design. The Roman Numbers behind the hour markers give a nice touch.

Get the watch that you Like not what everybody else likes.

With that said I just purchased a Brand New Never Worn Two Tone Rose Gold TOG Black face with Oyster Bracelet. I paid in the mid 5k range for it. Should be here Tomorrow. Can't wait !!!!

With that said and budget not being a factor I was looking to get a Day Date in Rose Gold. The Rose gold matches my skin color better then the White Gold or Yellow Gold. The Day Date is great watch but for me was only be worn on special occasions.

I saw the TOG at an AD in Vegas and fell in love with it. It is a great watch in my opinion and it seem like dont see it on everyone who has a rolex.

The TOG can go Dress Up or Dress Down.

I have had several Rollys over the years and The TOG is the latest addition to my daily wear Non Date SS Sub and the Brand New Two Tone Blue Sub that sits in the Safe.

Get the Watch that you really and disregard everyone else opinion except your own.

Get what you want because even though Rollies hold value you will never get what you paid for it (in the short term anyway) You will be the one wearing it.

I love that TOG (the one with the red second hand and red date numbers). I have looked at them a dozen times. Do not listen to the jacka$$ wanna be snobs who make the comment about a "poor man's sub". I have never heard something so ridiculous (especially since it costs more MSRP!).

That is a classy watch and I also love the polished center link on the Oyster bracelet.

Congratulations on selecting a Rolex you will not be sorry, that being said your two choices are not easy because both styles of Rolex are very desirable. The TOG is a great watch I have had one since 2004. I enjoy the watch, my only issues with the TOG is that the bezel takes a beating the scratches show fairly easy (24kt white gold) the dial is also some what plain, and the reflective markings do not show up that well in the dark.
I enjoy the red second hand and the red markings on the dial, the watch is very comfortable to wear in all forms of weather as well.

I agree with JJ if you are going to use the bezel that makes the watch more practical. If not there are many bezel and dial options with a standard DJ. The newer DJ black dial with the stick hour markers are much brighter at night than the TOG, a smooth DJ bezel can be buffed out easier that the TOG. The DJ is usually cheaper than the TOG as well. I would suggest that you go to your AD and try both watches on, which every one you like better is the watch you should get. Just my two cents, enjoy the process of finding, buying, and bringing you new Rolex home. It is quite a rush and soon if your not careful could become a nice addiction.

You should also really consider a Sub/date or GMT II as your first Rolex.Always a winner and something you wont grow tired off.The size @ 40mm is not really a problem for a smallish wrist and both models are really not that heavy.

Of the two models you mentioned,I would pick the DJ,not the TOG.The DJ is a classic.The steel bezels will be more enduring.Also,consider the new Jubilee bracelet.Its the bracelet,least prone to show scratching,of all the Rolex bracelets.
