Explorer II Question
When did Rolex start putting the 3186 movement in the Explorer II?
Do all Explorer II watches with a 3186 movement have the engraving on the rehaux(?), the inside of the bezel? Thanks |

Nobody has really done a good study of when the 3186 went into the Explorer II.. Everybody seems to have gone ga-ga over the fact that they were putting them in the 16710 during it's last year of production.
Since the Exp II was not planned to be discontinued, and it was planned for the 3186 to be the only 24hr movement going forward, then it isn't hard to imagine that they began using it sooner, rather than later as compared with the 16710. I do not think that there is any hard evidence that "all rehaut engraved Exp II's have a 3186"; so if it is a concern, you should check.. It is an easy process.. 3185 movements jump the hour hand ~5 hours per revolution of the crown, 3186 movements jump ~8. Beyond that, they function identically....

What's all the hoopla about the 3186?
I've seen GMT's with the 3186 selling for more than a GMTIIc...

Time will tell if this phenomena is long lasting. My guess is that it will not be since no Rolex has ever been prized simply because of a modified movement..... Rolex has modified their movements in models for decades.... Others feel differently...

my M series has 3186 and it is a sweet movement I have to say. M & V series eIIs are your last chance to get non maxi case, non maxi dial 3186 rollie.

Isn't the 3186 supposed to be more accurate than the 3185?

I think more accurate under certain circumstances like high shock environments.
I heard people have great results from the 3185. My 3186 consistently +1 so I don't know if this is better or not but I am quite happy. |
