Hi guys,

We all know that when we pick up a Rolex, chances of getting one with its crown straight up are like 1:100....seriously.

In 25 years and 16 Rollies, well I guess I could consider myself lucky...'cause I got two of them - both brand new - with crowns at 90 degrees to the horizontal!!

Firstly, my former SD...

and now my new Exp-II...

Someone on another forum (who was extremely anal about this) can eat his heart out!! LOL! Sorry, just couldn't resist!!

Not that I would really care, but when and if I finally get a sub and the crown isn't straight up can't they adjust it or something?

i believe it involves adjusting the sleeve which the crown actually screws into and yes it can be done, if it matters to you

Steve, I always knew the sleeve or barrel is screwed into the case but, do you think it could be tightened or loosen to accomadate the crown allignment without messing up the pressure rating or even stripping the threads of the sleeve?

there must be a tolerance factor hence no two crowns seem to be the same i believe it's a case of getting the right positioning between the various threaded items involved, a little time and patience by a competant watchmaker

It's something that very anal Rolexaholics (I won't mention any names here out concern for their privacy - I'll only refer to them by their initials - JJ

) worry about when they get up in the morning and when they go to sleep at night. Which is why they are insomniacs.

The rest of us don't really care - and therefore sleep well at night.

Insomnia? Me? I'm usually asleep before the proverbial "head hits the pillow" thing!!

Frankly, I'm not at all anal about this crown thingy....just wanted to start up a new thread and this is the first thing that came to mind.

For example, here's my beloved TT YM with its crown all over the place...

My YM did not have the crown straight up when I bought it, but it did after it's last service.

Good on ya, Al. Obviously they change the entire crown and stem at every service 'cause there is a waterproofing seal within the confines of the crown. That seal, over a period of time, gets compressed against the upper surface of the stem opening and would finally lose its sealing properties.

Hence, the full crown has to be changed. Of course, the new crown would have a different thread configuration which, by sheer luck, matched up with those of the stem to make the coronet land up in the straight up direction.

My SD (dearly departed) and my YM, the last two I have bought were both perfect. Lucky I guess, not so when I go to the casinos though.
