cleaning a vintage dial

Hi-

Posted this in the tech section, but no responses.. anybody have some advice?

I purchased a vintage sub dial that was recently damaged by the watch flooding with salt water. What is the best way to clean / remove the salt contamination from the dial without ruining it? Can I soak or clean it in any way? I don't want any salt residue touching the movement.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum!

I can't help you with the question. Do you have pics of the dial?

if we are talking matt dial ....heres my watchmakers advice ...'if it don't come off with a little spit and a cotton bud...it aint going to'. same way the art restorers do it.

if its g loss dial ...forget it

X2! Any more than that and you will likely make it worse than it is now.

Hi

Thanks for the advice. Its a gilt dial. Im not expecting it to shine up,it already has some pitting etc.. I just don't want to contaminate my movement.. When I receive the dial I will post a few pics.

Thanks,
Glenn
