Daytona SS black or white dial

I plan to buy a Daytona SS next year but cannot decide between black or white dial. White dial is about 10% cheaper, it is easier to read and to me it looks better from a distance. Black dial has more contrast and looks terrific when getting closer. How do you choose between black and white?

I don't think I will use chronograph function. Is it okay to buy a chronograph watch but don't use it?

I like the "coin flip" idea. I got SS with black dial but sometimes wish it was white; I'm sure I'd be second guessing myself if I'd got the white dial as well. So it probably doesn't matter that much; either way you're getting one of the most awesome, smooth-wearing, coolest watches of all time IMHO.

BTW, I rarely use the chrono function as my middle-age eyes have just a little bit of trouble making out all of the tiny little numbers. Still like to look at all those beautiful subdials tho......

1 vote for white-- to me its a better look. Whether you use all the functionality is up to you. I'd be willing to make an unscientific estimate that less than 10% of daytona owners know how to use a tachymeter anyway.

Hmmmm....lets see:

The tachymeter scale enables the speed of a moving body to be read off in km/h (or in some other unit of measurement). Measure the time taken to travel one kilometer (or a different unit) and read the result on the tachymeter scale. For example, the time taken is 40 seconds, equivalent to a speed of 90 km/h. You use your tachymeter to measure rates of speed. Although it is marked “kmh” for kilometers per hour your tachymeter can also be used to measure “mph” or other units per hour. It can calculate how many cars per hour pass a given point on the highway, or how many units roll off a production line per hour. Here’s how it works:

To Measure Speed of Travel:
1. Assume you wish to measure a car’s average speed over a one mile course. Start the stopwatch when the car passes the starting point. Stop it when the car passes the one-mile or one-kilometer mark.

2. Read the corresponding number on the outer tachymeter ring. Let’s say the car covered one mile or one kilometer in 45 seconds. The tachymeter number next to the 45 second mark is 80 – so the car averaged 80 miles per hour, or 80 kilometer per hour, over that measured course.

To Determine Units per Hour:
1. Start the stopwatch, count a convenient number of units and then stop the watch. Say, for example, that you are counting units of production and you stop the count at 10 units, and the sweep seconds hand reads 45 seconds.

2. The tachymeter number next to the 45 second mark is 80. Multiply 10 times 80 to get the number of units produced per hours: 800

I hope this made sense.....

It I can do this:

Then.... I can do this.....

I vote for White hands down because it always makes even a sports model watch look very elegant.

I wanted White and was lucky the AD had the one I wanted. The deciding factor for me was that it was a white dial watch when allI had at the time was black dial watches. However if Black was all they had at the time I would have taken that one as well as I really wanted a SS Daytona.

Based on Forum comments, it seems that in the West, White is king. In the East the Black is more popular - perhaps that is why they charge an extra premium for it where you live.

I think that you should get the one that you want to put on your wrist and wear around and be identified with every day...

As for Chronographs.......... I have several of them and don't seem to have much use for that function much any more considering all of the latest, more accurate, technology.... But they still make for a great looking time-piece....

Either one is in DIRE need of a CERAMIC bezel! These get so scratched up from day one that, while they look good and used, they look banged up and abused! The black ceramic with Platinum inlay may look awesome. IMHO.... PS- I like the WHITE dial!!!

Yes. I want that too. But I think it will take a long time for Rolex to update Daytona to have ceramic bezel.

I believe you will always lust after the one you don't have....own the white (and love it!)..you'll want the black and vice-versa.

I have the white...it is a stunning watch to wear...When i see the black out in the wild...I want that ..BUT also!

If I were to choose the first SS Daytona..I'd go for the white---only because I have ever regretted that decision...
