Icon5 Old style Submariner Bracelet - Simple Genius, or Cheap?

The more I look at the old standard sub bracelet (ie 93150) the more I think it's design is sheer genius in it's simple form and function.

What do you guys think?

If you like lightweight, cheap and rattly SS then yes, it's genius (marketing).

im a big fan of the 16610 Oyster Bracelet - its functional. Job done. no complaints.

however, IMO, the 116610 Oyster Bracelet is just a notch or two better than the 16610 Oyster Bracelet in every aspect.

i like them both.

They lasted that's for sure, hard to complain. The fact is that for the price the subs are getting, they needed to do a major upgrade, and they did. The new bracelet and clasp is amazing, the old bracelets and clasp do not even compare to fit, finish and comfort.

Finally Rolex introduced a watch that just might be worth the MSRP with the new subs.

X2

In my case my new bracelet is on my GMTIIC.

But as Eric said I do like both for different reasons.

The clasp is superior to the new style, which doesn't seem as reliable. But I like the solid center links, as they won't stretch.

I like them. I find that a well used 93150 or 78360 is extremely comfortable, and also reliable thanks to the very simple construction. But I remember my first meeting with them, and I was not impressed. But I am now. I even prefer them over the more updated versions with solid end links.

I have to admit though that the current all solid bracelets offers a massive, and nice, feeling of presence on the wrist.

Further on I also prefer the 78360/93150 compared to the older folded 7836/9315. But the riveted Oysters are cool.

Best,

A

I have to agree, Anders. I do, however, love the SEL and lug hole combo on my 16710.

I couldn't get used to the feel after wearing Omegas and Breitlings for years. I never doubted that it would last but it was too light/flimsy for my taste.

Good question, I like my GMTII Bracelet, I don't think it is cheap, The old Bracelet really needs to be evaluated in the closed position on the wrist

Does bracelet secure the watch without falling apart inadvertently. YES
Is the Bracelet comfortably Yes
Are you constantly removing and readjusting your watch No
Are you always worried about scratching your bracelet No
Does the Bracelet form as near as possible
a seamless transition when closed YES

I've used them for over four decades. They're strong and they work.

Yes the new bracelet is nice, but don't overlook the older style.

Genius I'm quite fond of my rattle

But, with the advent of the newer bracelets, it is now relegated classic.

Functional, but feels very old fashioned these days. The new clasps take the traditional functionality and build on it: Glidelock is one of the most nicely executed clasps that money can buy right now

I have watches with oyster bracelets in both the old and the new style - all bought in the last couple of years as I am a new Rolex junkie. While the new style is good and I enjoyed them from the start, the old style is continuously growing on me and I think they have more character! I think they are simple and efficient and therein lies the beauty.

The old style clasps were funtional but did seem a bit cheap compared to the head of the watch. The new ones including the Glidelock are far more in keeping with the watch IMO.

Old = genius. Does the job.

If you don't particularly like the new watch heads, who cares how fantastic the new bracelets are?

Considering when they were made, there was nothing like them at the time..

Sheer genious in the design: Lightweight and compact while using an engineering standard for strength and reliability..........

they have recently only improved upon what was an original, killer design....

Simple, strong, and reliable. I prefer the 93150 over the new style.

These bracelets came in the 70es, and back then they were genius and state of art. Today, and the last 10 years, they have been the laughing stock, because of the poor quality compared to other brands, but sold for very high prices.
I love both my 78360 and 93150, they wear great and will last my lifetime. I love the new quality bracelet, these should have been introduced 10 years ago.
I find the quality of the old TT bracelets just terrible, hollow links! Come on. A several thousand dollar watch, that has a streched bracelet for scrap in 10-15 years, thats just not good business.
