To JJ or other guru..Keep my RL in pant's pocket gonna cuase any problem?
Hi,
Anyone please help. It might sounds crazy for you guys but yes,I have to keep my RL in my pant pocket(front side) with me and carry around for a period of time due to some reasons. My question is, Is this gonna effect to any wheel or cause any damage to my watch? I raise this Q becuase once I got this new RL about last 2 weeks, I have put it in my pant pocket since then. I ve been kept checking the seconds almost everyday and it had gained around +10 sec ahead. Then last two days, it began to slow down or loose around to +2/+3 and even today is -2 sec behind. Is this mean any sign of something happend ? or just usualy thing for self-winding watch or esp our favourite Rolex watch? Please kindly help.. SO much appreciate you guys in advance!! |

Hi Teddy,
Welcome to TRF! While I'm certainly no guru, I think I can understand what you're trying to say. I too have been guilty of placing my Rolex in my front pocket when I was doing some lifting and moving of heavy artefacts at the museum where I worked. I was always in fear of scratching the clasp on some rough surface, so into the pocket it went. However, this never affected my time keeping or the performance of the watch. If you watch is still new and under warranty, I suggest you take it back to the AD where you bought it and have them regulate it. Not a big deal. Good luck and hope you enjoy your stay here. Cheers - JJ

No, in deed, I feel you are the one!(Guru). So many Thankfull for ur quick help. Actually I do concern with it's mechanism uncle, for the surface,I m not worry cos I wrap it with very good covers. So u can tell that it's okey to leave in that right? As I fear the leg movements might to much stronger comparing to hand or wrist's movement. And it gonna effect to some part or any wheel inside...?!? What do u think sir..?? Thanks for welcome me too Teddy |

Just call me "JJ"!! Thanks!! I don't think that by placing the watch in your pocket should have any adverse effect on the time keeping. You do need to take it back to your AD and have their watchmaker check it out....because the timing certainly is very erratic. Please take it back....that's the only way we'll know for sure what the real problem is. Good luck - JJ

I am guilty of the same practice. I put my Rolex in my front pocket when I want to keep it safe when lifting or working (quick jobs) or when I travel if I am in a shady part of town, I put my watch in the front pocket to keep from calling attention to myself. I have never noticed any time variations plus or minus. I think it could be hard on the bracelet rubbing together if it were an all day thing, for short periods of time I don't sweat it too much. Just my two cents worth.

Best solution? Carry a small soft, lint-free cloth and wrap it around the watch in such a way that it comes inbetween the clasp and the caseback as a buffer to prevent the clasp from scratching the living daylights out of the caseback. JJ

Welcome to our fine forum Teddy. I wouldn’t worry too much about your Rolex’s timing under the circumstances you described. The final observation, plus minus 2 seconds a day is an excellent result and way within the specifications. If you really want to find out the timing you’ll have to start wearing the watch ‘round your wrist and start on day one by manually winding the watch to full capacity. Try putting the watch down at the same time before you retire for the evening and make notes of the time. Do this for a full week and alternate crown up and down every other day. If the average deviation is plus or minus 5 seconds a day, it still is within specs.
Remember that you watch is a little machine and even though the design of the movement has been kept as simple and robust as possible, it still is made from over 200 parts, many of them moving. Great choice for a watch, will serve you for many, many years.

Morning gents. I'm off to assault my local training hill on my mountain-bike, but it's nice to see the thread veering wildly away from topic in true TRF fashion. I once did a search for the word "tosser" and my computer blew up. That's why I love it here.
On a serious note (if you'll forgive me a digression) for teddygmt - Hey Teddy, don't forget that your Rolex's automatic movement is a refinement to the winding mechanism. As per posts above, sticking it down your pants will not give the same movements to the winder as your wrist would, and that could change its timekeeping behaviour. That said, it's still a watch and you can still just wind it three times a week, which will partially compensate. The physical wear issues you'll have to sort out as JJ suggests of course. You can't over-wind it as it has a neat protection against that. I think Rolex could easily incorporate this thread into their marketing. Imagine the ad. Images of action-men sailing, golfing, racing cars and finally, stuffing their watch into their pants. Slogan "Rolex - You Can Stuff It, But You Won't Snuff It." Or, the shot could be a bit ambiguous - from behind so you're not sure where it's being stuffed. Slogan "Rolex- Still a Tool Watch" Could I get a gig in the marketing department? |
