Dinner with the wife: I usually check what's on tap and get an IPA if they have it, if not I get a Stella Artois and a chilled glass.

Out with guys: scotch, neat

Haha, noted. The point is that it goes down smoothly and quickly. I can't drink straight whiskey without taking an hour per glass. Perhaps I will acquire the taste.

Let me see if I can get close, seeing as how I went to an Agricultural school... if you're going to drink a single malt, have it neat. If you absolutely must (or if it's a cask strength kind that really would taste better weakened a touch), a splash of water. Ice: never.

The experts reckon a drop of water brings out the flavour in a good malt, especially the cask strength ones.
I tend to drink it neat but would only tend to drink good whisky when I have time to sit and savour.
Like with everything, drink what you enjoy, but asking for a slice of lemon in whisky in any pub down Edinburghs Royal Mile will get you a lot of funny looks!
