Grinding sound from crown!?
Hey guys, just had my GMTIIc die on me so, went to give it a normal unscrew & wind however, noticed that now (all of a sudden) it makes a faint grinding noise while winding clockwise / forward. When I roll it backward / counterclockwise, no noise.
I screwed / unscrew the crown a few times and tried to fully extend the crown / depress a few times. No luck, still makes the grinding noise and this is not normal. Any ideas why? Perhaps something is caught in their, debris, etc.? I don't really get the watch dirty and have had it since '08 with no issues.

That has happened to me several times before, always around the time I need a service anyway, but the guy at the AD once told me that it doesn't necessarily mean that the rotor isn't working well, so he suggested that I just go ahead and keep wearing it, and it would keep itself wound. But I don't like it and have found it so hard to live with that I have always just sent it in for service.

It still winds, works fine, but, now makes that unpleasant grinding. Used to be smooth as silk to wind and screw....
I wear it daily and never get it dirty. Wash weekly / bi-weekly. Seems odd to need a service at three years.

Yes will do harm whatsoever fact will do good as most crown related problems are down to lack of use.Yes I know its a automatic but even the crown needs a bit of exercise to keep it fit, other that the general time reset date etc.

30-turn is the watch standard I've been told from RSC, just when winding it up after a long rest.. (not that it matters so much)
If one's meeting resistance when winding I would have it checked, mentioned before in another thread winding a 1030 movement with resistence caused my crown wheel to crack costing several months web searching for spare part not to mention cost. But this is a fairly new watch so I'm assuming a parts loose. Would have it checked nevertheless. |

Are you sure the sound is not the faint clicking of the ratchet?

Thanks guys. It gets wound about once a month but, I could start doing it more (once resolved). No, I know the sound of the ratchet / release and it was so very smooth for the last three years but, I traveled and didn't take the watch so, it died. Upon return, it was like one member mentions "nails on a chalk board"
Very odd. I guess off to the AD I go. Would've been nice if it occurred during the warranty but, at three years, it's my issue. But, many here note the same thing. Oh, when I do wind, when dead, I do it at 40-50.
