Impulse Buy

Ok, so I've been saving for a high end dress watch - a used Patek 5127J if I can find one. I'm not even halfway there yet. Today, I'm in the city center walking by a pawn shop and there in the window, all by itself, is a 16610 at a great price. So I walk in and talk to the guy. He and the store seem legit. It's a K serial number circa 2002; it has papers. He opens the case. I'm no expert, but I've seen enough 3135 moments and everything looks ok. The case has been polished but I think it is a good job. Next thing I know, I'm off to the bank around the corner to get cash. What am I doing? Back at the shop I notice something strange. It has lug holes AND SEL? Sure enough, its fitted with a 93250 instead of the 93150 it should come with. I'm worried that this would devalue the watch. We haggle a bit and the next thing I know, I'm on the way home trying to figure out how to tell my wife what I just did. Please look at these pics and tell me I'm not completely out of my mind .

The more current 93250 bracelet along with sel's only increases the value and solid wear-ability of a 16610 sub.

I am a doctor(witch/Phd.)....................trust me....................you are not out of your mind.......in fact as you purchased a pre-owned classic sub with lug holes proves to me that you are in full possession of all your faculties.

The Grand Curmudgeon has sanctioned your purchase.........it must be the will of the watch gods.

Congrats on a great looking sub.

SELS and lug holes were around with K series GMT II and I would imagine they were same with subs, so I don't think you have cause to be worried, in fact you may have a more desirable combination

A bit off-topic Martin, but I'm loving your icon - I've just been watching the BBC4 documentary about the making of Screamadelica. Will be digging that CD out in about 2 seconds time

Sure, they were asking 3800 and I got it down to 3500 (EURO that is). The dollar has been taking a beating for a while and at todays USD to EUR fx-rate, that is just under $5200. Maybe not a remarkable price in the US but 3500 € here in Europe is unheard of. Similar condition Subs are going for well over 4k EUR. I think I got really lucky.

And thanks everyone for your support. Now the WIFE

Hmmmmm.....

Congrats on the new purchase!

You can call Rolex and ask them to let you know if this bracelet was "born" with this watch... They'll ask you for the serial numbers from the bracelet and the watch and be able to tell you (at least in the USA they can).

While I think it's awesome to have ANY Rolex (rather than NO Rolex), in my honest opinion, I would not purchase a watch that came with a non-conforming bracelet. I think it can devalue the watch. But that's just the purist in me!

Many vintage subs have such a worn-out or nonexistent 9315 bracelet that often times it is just placed on a 93150. Obviously, for a super-collectible hard to find piece it is nice to have it all original, but for something like a red sub..........a non-original bracelet does just fine, and hurt the value little, if any.

I don't think a non-original bracelet on a 16610 is going to "devalue" the watch.

Sorry friend - I respectfully disagree. In fact, I think only on a "super-collectible hard to find piece" (such as the red sub) will a non-conforming bracelet be accepted without devaluating the watch. For a watch that has a million copies out there, a non-standard part will (again, just my opinion) certainly devalue the watch. Perhaps not devalue by a whole lot, but still, it's not a complete piece.

Just to illustrate - you know how many Rolex people/collectors are - we want the original box, the original cushion, the original paperwork, the original cloth, the original outer box, the original hologram, the original bezel protector, the original anchor - we want it ALL to be original there... If it's not all there, allright, that's probably okay - we'll still take it, BUT... we'll pay less....
