Why Plain backed
Hi Guys
Does anyone know if there is a reason why Rolex watches all seem to have plain case backs? I also have a Omega which is decorated with a Sea Monster on the case back? Is there a reason? Thanks |

Traditionally it gives a place to engrave. (especially since many rolex watches are given as gifts to commemorate special events.
(I had mine personalized with my initials-very simple, and done by rolex Canada ) |

While the previous post re: engraving is certainly true, not ALL Rolexes have plain case backs.

This is just my opinion, but it seems to me that case back engravings which change from time to time - ala Panerai, Omega etc. is very un-Rolex. Really flies in the face of their "minimalist" tool-esque approach...blinged out Diamond infested (er..encrusted) models not withstanding.

The plain back is the Rolex signature, much like the horse is the Omega signature. It just so happened that nothingness is the Rolex signature.

Does anyone else find watches with a deeply engraved back stick less on your wrist in hot weather?
Unless my Rolex is on a NATO I do notice it sticking more than my others...

I agree about the smooth back sticking better, which for me is a good thing. I noticed that the new rolexes have very smooth inner clasp parts as well. In all, this makes the watch hug my wrist without the bracelet being too tight.

Nothing to see back there just move along.
That is of course when the watch is serving it's primary office of telling time on your wrist:-) |

Nothing to see inside the case either except the movement. So, would it be OK to just put an old ETA2824 movement in there? I doubt it.

...but a caseback engraving is aestetic, and the caseback performs exactly the same task technically whether engraved or not, while the Rolex movement is different and far superior to the ETA 2824-2 in more than just looks, whether you can see the movement or not.

I like the plain case back for engraving.

insides is for function of keeping time. (didn't buy eta / dont want eta.) back of watch is to keep insides from getting wet & helps so my arm hair doesn't get stuck in movement. as far as excessive decoration, if thats what floats your boat, i question your choice of watch forums? |
