advice on sending out a 5513 for service
Greetings to all! I have a Rolex Submariner 5513 left to me by my father that I am about to send for service for the first time to RSC Dallas -
I believe it was purchased by my father between 1977 and 1987 - and to the best of my knowledge has never been sent out for service. Reading thru the forum I know enough to keep the hands and dials original. Should i keep the plastic crystal original? Would it devalue the watch much if the crystal is replaced? Any advice is welcome pertaining to sending out this watch for service. One thing of note is I intend to keep this watch and pass it on down to the family. Thanks in advance and forgive the so - so camera phone picture. |

Welcome to the Forum..
Most experts would say that replacing the crystal will not devalue your watch and is important for maintaining its waterproof integrity. Plexi can get brittle over time and result in hairline cracks, and eventually, failure.. Enjoy your heirloom........

Welcome to the forum
You have a very desirable watch, agree with tools,a new crystal won't devalue your sub.don't change the bezel insert either,a new bracelet if suggested wouldn't hurt the value either.the Dallas RSC will mail you a letter with an estimate, and list suggestions to your 5513.Any more questions that might arrive after you get the letter from the RSC,just add them here, some of the members here will be glad to help.looking forward to the after pics, nice watch.

First of all, great watch and welcome
I'm not an expert in any way but I would suggest sending it Bob Ridley for the service. I heard nothing but good about him. And also, aside from keeping the dial, hands, and bezel insert original... I would also suggest not having the case polished. Of course it's your choice but in my opinion an unpolished case is much more desirable for a vintage watch like that and it is also more desirable with collectors. Most of all, enjoy the heirloom for years to come |

I would take it to a local watchmaker that is Rolex certified, that way we could have a little talk before him doing the work. I have heard stories of collectors who have sent vintage pieces off to Rolex and had the face and hands replace. I have heard of DRSD dials being replaced. Ouch.

Will RSC Dallas or NYC work on older, semi-vintage/vintage watches?
Back in 2003 & 2005 RSC Beverly Hills wouldn't work on my 1960's & 1970's era Rolex watches...the indie RSC in San Francisco did the work.

RSC NY serviced my '67 5513 a few years back, and they just serviced my late 60's 1675, so it should not be a problem.

I send my watches to Bob Ridley and in fact have one with him right now. I personally don't want anyone else touching my watches. The only exception is Bexley RSC--they worked on my 5513 Milsub and 5514 Comex--did movement service on both. If you send to RSC--make sure you specify you want dial and hands kept as is!! Nice watch by the way--a true family heirloom!!
