Where is/will be 14060's place among historical Subs?

I'm re-evaluating my watch collection and considering letting my 5513 (as well as other Rolex pieces) go. I have a 1998 series 14060 that I've finally got around to wearing and am considering keeping this one as my long term sub (my Tudor 7016 doesn't count ).

Pre 5513 are of course rare and expensive, 5513 is the iconic sub, 14060m the upgrade, and now the current model the future.

Just wondering what the thoughts are regarding the 14060's place in Sub history and how it may be viewed in the future vintage forums/marketplace.

I don't know whether they're still producing it or not but to answer your main question, I think your own guess is as good as anyone's. There's not really any way of knowing how the watches will be viewed/collected further down the line.

Having said that, I believe that the 5513 will remain the icon. The 14060(m) is the spiritual successor and a way of having a somewhat more usable yet similar watch. However, the 5513 has historic significance with everything from the Bond-connection to Royal Navy diver use, etc. The 14060(m) does not have any of that, as far as I know. Stories matter. I therefore believe that the 14060 will never come near the 5513 in terms of status/collectability but it's a nice watch and if you're looking to have just one watch with which you build your own history, then perhaps the 14060 is the way to go.

100% agree with that.

I would never let go of a 5513 in preference to a 14060. In fact I have done the complete reverse, I sold a 14060 in order to obtain a 5513.....

The current reference is like you say the 14060m, which does still have some conection to the older subs due to the size of the case, as for 14060 which was the last sub to use tritium before they moved over the lumi \SL.

I think this will be seen in years to come as another piece of Rolex history, as the prices off 5513 keep going up therefore this will then be seen as a cheaper alternative, also to add to this would be that if Rolex ever decide to stop producing the current model and move everthing over to the larger case subs then it will only drive it up further.

This is exactly the conversation I was hoping to start.

I agree with all of your opinions so far. It seems that parts for the the 60's era 5513s are going to become harder to come by (with reasonable prices). I've reviewed sale prices for the 5513s on various sites (ebay doesn't really count to me) and noticed a spike in asking prices.

However, the 14060 (not the "m" model) seems to be the bargain, especially head only sales (I bought mine 2 years ago for just over 2K). It doesn't appear that there has been much price movement as far as collectability/desire for this model. I purchased my 14060 because after sending my 5513 to Bob Riddley, I can't bring myself to wear it!!

The reason I became interested in watches (particularly Rolex) was because of the owner's histories (one of the few "possessions" that could have meaning to men based on their life experiences), heirloom potential, and overall use. I'm just wondering; will my son or other future relatives use the 5513 the way I'd want them to (when I can't even do it myself!)

My current "beaters" are my 2003 Ex. II as a work watch (this watch was purchased especially because of the nexus between it's original intended use and my work) and the 14060 and Watchco SM 300 for daily mischief/adventures/yard work .

please share more thoughts on this...
