Use vs. Abuse....
Before my Sub was stolen, I had worn it everyday for 20 years...To work, to play, under any and every circumstance....
The watch (When last seen) still looked basically new..... I certainly think it's possible to "wear" and enjoy a watch on a daily basis without "trashing" it.... I've seen some pictures lately of, what some people are calling; "Well worn watches" that seem to reflect more "abuse" the use... Use'em....Don't abuse'em...... |

Definitely.
However, some watches attract scratches and dings, the DSSD being one example. Another thing, which is happening to my watches, is that the bracelet, and some parts of the case, gets a bit of polishing from my Paul&Shark wool jumpers. The material is a bit rough, and I don't wear any other sweaters/jumpers, so my watches during the 9months you have to have a sweater on over here get's a 9h/day light polish...

BTW...
My 1675 is a perfect example of a watch that is 33 years old, and looks almost as good as new.

It really depends on what you are using it for. My 14060M is primarily used for diving. I have some bumps and bruises on it just from the sheer act of going through the diving routine of shore diving, and having to stumble over rocks to get into the water, and rough seas while boat diving. I have a pretty good ding on one of the lugs that was from a time when we were diving right before a hurricane in Grand Cayman and I stumbled and bumped it on the dive boat.
I wouldn't say that I abuse the watch because I acquired it to use diving. However, I would say that it will show more wear than one that has been used desk diving. I do mostly agree with you though Clay. I try to take my watches off if I am going to do something that might harm the watch where it is not necessary to wear it.

I have been wearing my 16750 GMT Master pepsi daily for the last 10 years of my law enforcement career. In my 28+ years on the job I always had the best life saving equipment I could afford and this included my timepiece. The GMT has picked up a few marks here and there but overall it looks pretty good with an occasional acrylic buffing.
After lots of street and range time I am considering sending it off to RSC NY for an overhaul to make it ready for my long overdue retirement! These watches are called tool watches for good reason! dave |

My 16233 was worn as a daily for 3yrs, and when sold did not even require a polish.

I wore my Rootbeer for over 20 years in the kitchen. I enjoyed every minute. So I retired and had it redone. It looks great and hope to pass it on to my son. When I go I will miss my Rootbeer more then other things I have aquired.

Hi Guys,
New here on the forum. Since almost two yeasr I'm the proud owner of a SD. I must say, I'm amazed when people say in posts that they've worn their watch daily and doing alomst everything with it (as I do) and not having any scratches or anything. Mine already has some major scratches and minor dings. Like i said I wear it all the time but I take it of if I'm going to work on my bike or yard or so. Before this watch, I've had a Citizen EcoDrive that `i've worn for 15 years and it has less scratches. I love my Rolex but I find it picks up scratches and dings faster than my other watch. I did not expect this since Rolex is using 904 steel and all. What's your opinion? |
