Which Rolex should I buy my newborn son for his 18th birthday
I'm thinking of buying my newborn son a (new) Rolex watch to give to him on his 18th birthday.
Which one of the following do you think I should buy and why? Sub C LN Sub 14060M (while stocks last) He will no doubt inherit my existing collection of watches (see below) but I really like the idea of his first watch being something more symbolic i.e. his very own, unworn by Dad, 18 years old but BNIB and.... Not just one of my old watches. Something says I should buy him the 14060M as it seems more retro than the Sub C and I generally prefer the cleaner look, but I just cant make my mind up. My existing collection is: Seamaster Aqua Terra Seamaster PO Speedmaster Moonphase PAM 329 Milgauss GV 116610 LV 116710 LN Let me know your thoughts! Regards, J |

Let him buy his own first Rolex. He'll appreciate it (and the ones he inherits from you) more.

I agree. The watches that you pass down to him will have far more meaning and value to him.

I bought my SD the hard way i.e. worked for the money myself. I'm not a big fan of rolex's for 18th\ 21st, etc. I know a guy who had everything handed to him on a plate & he used to say his dad was this & his dad was that everytime he didn't get a expensive birthday\ xmas present. Put the money away for your son's education - once he graduates - he can buy "YOU" a watch |

Would you consider getting him a Datejust II or Daydate?

TBH, I think you should actually give one of your watches to your son rather than BNIB but that is my 2 cents. :)
EDIT - sorry didn't realise he is just a new born. But I still think you dont need to buy him a BNIB he never seens. It is more sentimental to give him something that you owned before! |

I tend to agree with OP , disagree with others
I think it would be cool to get a BNIB watch on my 18th or whatever age , and I am not the only one judging by how many on here are looking for birthyear watches ( including myself). I would go for 116610 ( LN or LV) or something that was recently released - simply because it was the latest when he was born ... but since you already have that one , maybe something not in your collection. Above is only valid if its part of your blow-away money :) |

Give him a Rolex when he graduates from college at about 22, kids are more responsible then. I plan to give my DJ to my nephew when he graduates from college in about 20 years.

I had planned to do the same thing for my daughters... ended up buying them each a diamond heart necklace instead.
It came down to my concern of what would happen to a Rolex sitting in a safe for 18 years... without being serviced... everything would dry up. |

I think this is an idea that is way better in theory than practice. 18 years from now, wrist watches will largely be a thing of the past as we'll have other type of wrist devices that communicate, hold our money, GPS-enabled etc, etc, etc. The vast majority of teenagers today don't wear wrist watches already...
Secondly, you assume that your son will share your interest in first of all material matters, secondly automatic watches per se, and thirdly your passion for Rolex. Remember, this is YOUR passion/dream, not his. A lot can/will happen in almost 20 years. If you twist my arm, I'd say get a SubC black. It is the ultimate cannot-go-wrong-choice. |

I agree it's a great idea, your watches when he gets them will have a totally different meaning to him, than getting a new 18 year old Rolex that has been kept for 18 years untouched, anyone you choose will be an amazing gift but I would tend to lean towards the sub c as it is the new kid on the block,as is your son,I would think hinding it for 18 years and not telling him it's there would also add to the experience too.
Even if your son does not share your love of watches,a Rolex on an 18th birthday is something even a non watch lover would appreciate,as the saying goes it's the thought that counts and giving such a present it would be clear a great amount of thought and love when into the gift. |

Personally I think that giving him one of your watches will mean more to him.
You'll basically be giving him something that he will have grown up seeing you wearing. For 18 years he'll be watching you look after your watch and will completely understand what it means to you, and therefore it will feel all the more special that you're willing to give it to him. He's going to aspire to be like his dad, and will therefore appreciate the transition of a watch passing from his dad's wrist to his. Just my opinion of course, I've got two daughters so what do I know :) |

I like the idea of giving him a watch you bought in his birth year and held for him.
I understand the sentimental value of passing on one of your own watches, but you are going to do that anyway. I find it inherently interesting that this watch was a) bought for him when he cannot even comprehend what time is and b) it was carefully stored for 18 years waiting for him. What a neat idea. On the merits of giving an 18 year old such an expensive watch, I cannot comment. I think such a gift is warranted after a large achievement (ie: graduation from university, first job, etc.). The key is for someone to have appreciation for such an object and not take it for granted. I have a SubC so I am fairly biased towards it. But for some reason the 14060 seems to fit this idea well in my opinion. It sounds like there are some ceramic models in the cards in the future anyway for him. Best of luck! |

How about treating yourself to a new watch as a celebration of your new born. Then, use it for 18 years, along with your other watches, and then give it to him.
Not only does he have a birth-year watch, but also something that has been bought and used by you and handed down. WIN-WIN!!!! |

Buy him a new one is better since this is his first, he has to learn how to take care of the watch before he can take care of yours later. Just my opinion , I think you can ask him which one he wants, if you want a surprise , then get him a ND Sub, the date is not important because I'm sure he use his mobile phone everyday ( texting girlfriend ) . |

I'll pick the PAM 329. Very good styling for teenagers to young adults. Brand got growth potential. Maybe it'll be the most desirable brand for the next generation. Plus, it's affordable (for now)

I like your idea of buying one and putting it away for 18 years. Just think, if you bought him a Sub-C for $8,000 now, what a hero you would look like when he inherits a watch that will have a SRP of $50,000 in 18 years.

You don't know what his personality will be when he turns 18. He might not even be interested in watches at all. Why not just wait and see? get him something he will really appreciate

I would just buy the watch and wear it everyday, and when the proper time comes I would give it to him.
