Explorer II

Hi guys.

Hoping someone out there can help. Being the proud owner of GMT II master and very proud of it, I have come to the conclusion that one Rolex is never enough. On the waiting list for SS Daytona !! whilst waiting I am considering adding to my rolex collection. I am seriously looking at Explorer II model (white face), whilst I realise that it is a very personal thing could any one out there cast their opinion on the pros and cons (if any) of this model and where would you recommend I purchase it in the UK, bearing in mind I have lived in Australia for the past three years.

Hoping someone out there can help

Many thanks

The white dial Explorer seems to be the Rolex of the month around here.

I am sure you will be bombarded with info and opinions any minute now.

Hi Ozwalk and welcome .
I, like you, live in the UK and am thinking about a white Exp. II but will probably seek out a nice pre-loved one.
One thing I like about the white dial is that it just seems so easy to tell the time at 1st glance (and most other sports watches I have are black dial).
Keep us posted and good luck.

Hey Ozwalk,

As you know the white EXP II uses the same 3185 movement as your GMT II.
I've always found the white EXP II to be a stunning beautifull piece that goes well in any enviornment.
There are those that say because of the slightly sloping non coin edge bezel the EXP II presents a slightly less "aggressive" look and feel it's the ultimate "stealth" sport model. As one who loves dual time zone pieces I've found the white EXP to be the perfect compliment to the GMT II.

Interestingly when my son graduated from college I gave him the pick of any modern piece I had. He picked the white EXP II.

Here's the one that is still "in the family" LOL!

I've found the EXP and GMT go quite well together,

One thing to keep in mind, there aren't many white face sport models made.
They do go well together.

Hi Ozwalk

Welcome to the FINEST Rolex forum of the world...........PERIOD!

You might want to read the threads running currently on over esteemed member "JJ Irani"'s thoughts on whether to buy (another) Explorer II.

I mean: It might help you in your own decision.

Essex is a lovely place, by the way!

I have both a White dial and Black Dial Exp II. FInd the Black dial version easier to read in low light conditions. The white dial version, it is hard to see the minute hand in low light I have found. But, the white dial version does show the fingerprints and smudges less on the crystal as well. Both are due to the white background. The White Exp II would be far better if they made it with bigger hands with more lum and more contrast. It is a nice looking watch and is dressy and casual both. The Bezel really blends into the bracelet and it seems smoother and slimmer than the other Rolex watches.

If you measure with a caliber you will find the diameter of the Exp II is actually 39mm instead of 40mm. ALso the twin lock crown is a little easier to manipluate than on the GMT II, as the Exp II bezel stops before the crown guards/crown starts. WHere as on the GMT the bezel covers a little bit.

White face Explorer II owner here and I agree that it is an all occassion watch.

Be it with t-shirt/jeans or office wear, I find it to easily matches with whatever's in my wardrobe.

The white Explorer II ... the only white dial sport Rolex, thats immediately available,no waiting lists,on which you can negotiate a discount and is relatively inexpensive,to start with. Then looking at Mike's excellent pic,it holds it own against the white ss Daytona .... Does make one think does it not ???

Welcome to TRF, Ozwalk.

Have to agree with what Chris just said above. The WHITE Exp-II is still the only sports Rolex that's readily available in WHITE dial.

Oz, you would do a lot worse than trying my AD (Upchurch and son in Colchester,Essex). Speak to a chap called Steven. He wears a Sub Date and really knows his stuff. He even started drawing me diagrams to explain the difference between SEL and non SEL the last time I was in there.

Oz let me know how you get on. They have a great selection and are great to deal with. I would say they are the best AD in East Anglia by some way.
