I can not stop myself from thinking that the Jubilee bracelet is fragile...

... Convince me that it is not so.

I had my first Oyster bracelet in 1988, and since the mid 90s I've been wearing an Oyster bracelet pretty much every day. I never really liked the Jubilee until I got the Tudor version in 2009, and now just a few days ago I bought a Jubilee 62510H to try out on my Explorers. I like the look more than I thought (), but I can not help myself from comparing to the Oyster bracelets that I have (folded, hollow mid links, SELs, non-SELs, new style all solid... every version with the exception of the older riveted).

I usually have fairly active holidays, including skiing during the winter (down hill and cross country), swimming, diving, water sports, cross country hiking with some climbing, cycling (motorcross for the first time this summer...), and more. Since the mid 90s I have ALWAYS an Explorer on my wrist whilst doing this, and it sits comfortably on an Oyster bracelet.

Now, convince me that the Jubilee is as good ... or not ... as the Oyster when it comes to "abuse" (or should I say "use").

Some pictures of the watches I have in mind for the coming activities:

A

Been wearing Rolex since 1978, I have had two oysters fail during that time and 0 jubilees. Tp be fair I have worn oysters 2 to 1 during that time.

Tough as nails...but looks delicate to some

I did this to my watch in a cycling crash.....the bracelet was fine.....I have worn one of my two DateJust 16030's for thousands and thousands of training and racing miles.....the bracelets are slightly elongated due to wear (you know I hate the S word if you have been here for the last 2 or 3 years)....but they have been solid between the late 80's and now....in fact one of them is now on the wrist of my eldest son....when it is on his wrist it still looks almost new....in my opinion every bit as tough as an Oyster bracelet...

So, safe to say that in addition to wearing your watch to Disney World, cycling is out too

IMO the jubilee is meant for dressier occasions. I know...I know, many consider watches with bracelets to be non-dress / sport watches.

Therefore jubilees were not meant to take the abuse a flip lock oyster was - again, IMO.

My RSC person once told me jubilees "fail" more often than oysters when I was considering getting a jubilee for my Pepsi.

I think Jubilees are every bit as tough as Oysters. Just a different look, and IMHO much more comfortable.

Engi, The white is back on its Oyster bracelet as I write this ...

But I am fascinated by the different look that the Jubilee offers those two... The 14270 still has the Jubilee on. I think it is a wonderful blend of dressy, sporty ... and (IMO) cool:

Great Jubilee Anders, I just associate jubilee bracelets to the "dress side" of watch wearing ...

I'm still wearing my father's 1950 TOG with tt bracelet. It's well "stretched" at this point but still useable. What more could you ask of a bracelet? There really isn't much workload on a bracelet, anyway. It's only holding a lightwt watch on your wrist.

Thanks all for the replies.

@colnago: Bill, I remember your story, and also that you gave your son your watch. I should have thought about that. Good story. I like the fact that you had a DJ on Jubilee on your wrist whilst training!

@Speed: Bill (another Bill), this is how I feel too... The Jubilee is dressier (IMHO)... but I have to listen to the friends here too. I need to trust the Jubilee.

@2th_DR, @Etur: Mark, Eugene you're both correct. It is super-super-comfortable. But a well used (+10 years) Oyster is good too . I should try the superjubilee on...

@Dan: All my watches and bracelets get a good clean every week. BTW: Did you have a Jubilee on your DJ? If so, would you say that the superjubilee on your GMT is more comfortable than the older, or just heavier?

Best,

A

Anders,
Yes, my '86 DJ had a classic jubilee. Although the super jubilee is weightier and more robust they both feel the same once worn, imho.
Btw, I love the EXP II/ jubilee combo.

Good news ...

... or perhaps bad ... since I obviously need to try the (expensive) superjubilee...

Yes, the ExII-jubilee combo is great! It was Hannes over at the German forum that inspired me initially with his great pictures, and there are a couple of nice pictures on this forum too. Very inspirational. Not forgetting when JJ had the superjubilee on his 16570...

Larry's [tools] EXP II/ jubilee pics have also inspired many a Explorer owner, I'm sure.

True. That is why I am going to try out the Jubilee on my black ExII too... like Larry's.

But not today. The last couple of days I've spent way too much time searching for pictures of Rolexes on Jubilee bracelets...

Karis, thanks. Your 116234 is in my mind the perfect up-to-date style of the classical DJ.

I just have to decide whether I like the 116200 more or not...

Obviously on Jubilee...

Dude, I have used and abused my date just since 1990. You have nothing to worry about. Here is a few things it has been thru: working in a tire and brake shop for 4 years, A firefighter for 18 years - Structure fires in a busy urban city (steam, smoke, swinging sledge hammers and axes, training ect., vehicle extrications, training, backpacking, mt. biking, fishing, camping, waterskiing and rafting, parachuting and bungie jumping, yard work ect. I was even in a flashover in the hallway of an apt building that put me and my firefighter in the burn center and this watch looks new.

Bro, were the watch and don't worry about it. I just had a service and the watch came back looking brand new.

With that said I imagine the Oyster bracelet would be more durable however I cant imagine putting it thru more than it has been thru in the last 20 years.

Thanks, great story!

I'm not really surprised. This is what I expect from the bracelet, but having worn an Oyster for many years with it's thicker link pins the Jubilee just feels a bit more fragile... just as my folded Oyster bracelet do...

But I am now convinced that it is time for me to start to enjoy Jubilee bracelets!

Give me twenty more years and I'll start wearing president bracelets too... nah ... a bunch of Oysters and a couple of Jubilees should be enough... or???

Best,

A

George,

I am glad you posted in my thread!

I just mentioned you in my reply to Engi. That LV of your's is truly inspirational!

It was from your post over at the German forum (in the Jubilee-thread) I got proper information on which end links to use. (Just assuming that it is YOU on both forums...)

I have worn out 2 Jubilees, but none has ever failed. The first 2 lasted over 20 years each, and the first used to get hammered in a jet fighter cockpit, always being bashed whilst selecting switches under up to 9G. No problems, and more comfortable than the original Oyster which was quickly replaced when the springs kept failing.

My SS Super-Jubilee looks to be all but indestructible. I also had a classic SS jubilee which I bought new in '86'. ($450 cdn.!!) Wore that for 16 years without a problem. They're very tough & well made. Prolly last for decades w/proper care.=Mark=
