Rolex Stigma
Is there a perceived "stigma" associated with the Rolex brand? Another poster stated that he waited a long time before buying based on his perceived stigma associated with Rolex. Is there a perceived stigma and if so what do you guys think it is...snobbery or something like that? Curious about others opinions on this!

Any perceived stigma is your own...who cares buy what you like and wear what you like.
Many Rolex watches are extremely understated and not decked out in gold and diamonds I doubt anyone who sees me walking around with a Sea-Dweller thinks...snob.

You mean that it is such a well built, reliable, historic, and awesome looking watch?

A friend of mine who is a wis will not wear rolex. He sticks to raymond Weil and the like. He associates rolex with the drug dealer Market.
I don't agree at all obviously, but even he admires the watches I have. |

What people don't know about, they mock!
A friend of mine noticed my GMT, first thing he said was "how much was that" I said, after pointing to his wifes new Nissan car "a lot less than that, but I can use this everyday for the next 5years and it will be worth the same amount, how much will the car be worth?" He replied "probably not much". |

Ive been called a snob, shallow and insecure for wearing a Rolex. But honestly I think deep down its just jealousy, so ignore it and enjoy your watch
PS Might I also add that the same people who said that also asked me to let them try it on lol |

If you drive a Benz, wear Armani, if your wife's ring is in excess of a carat you can be called those things as well...it is simple jealousy IMHO...

I never worry about negative comments re my watch as I don't remember ever getting any negative comment at all. Even if I did I would just give the hand! :D

I've thought about this quite a bit and have sought a lot of opinions. I've wrestled, I've soul-searched. The bottom line is:
Wear what you like. If someone is going to make a snap judgment of you based on your watch choice, that's their problem. And people will make snap judgments about you for any number of other things besides your watch--your clothes, hair, manner of speaking, etc. You can't control it, so don't worry about it. You just be kind and courteous to everyone you meet and enjoy your watch. |

I feel like some of the threads have a lot of negativity to them. Its a watch forum, we are here to enjoy our watches not worry about what others think or what they might think. There are other things in life to be concerned about than what someone thinks of you.

I have to admit, I won't wear my Rolexes in front of certain family and friends to avoid them judging me (or my spending habits) one way or another. If I put on a $15k AP ROO, they wouldn't blink because they've never heard of it. But Rolex is the only brand that most people have heard of, and they know it costs a lot (relative to what they'd spend on a watch, anyway). I really shouldn't care, but I'd like to avoid the conversation that would ensue if they ever noticed.

Only issue I encounter is when shopping. The attitude with many people seems to be that if you can afford a fancy/expensive Rolex watch you can afford to pay more for the goods or services you are buying . I now wear my trusty solar Citizen when shopping for discounts.
