Wow he tried the old craigslist scam here. LOL!

It's always the same a fake email address and a bogus PayPal email that says the funds are on hold until a valid tracking number is provided. Total BS scam!

Good work Oscar on alerting everyone.

I don't think these crooks have a chance of fooling you guys here, but hopefully your public outings will help other less experienced sellers.

You can look at the headers from his email, and by looking at the IP addresses within the header can often find out where the email actually originated from........Can NEVER be too careful!!

Another scammer

My sister-in-law just called me, she is selling her car and an email from a prospective buyer.
- He is insisting Paypal is the only way he can pay.
- He can't be contacted by phone.
- He will send his "agent" to collect the car
- He did not even haggle a little bit over the price
- He is pushing for a FAST transaction (ie. he wants to collect before the ruse is exposed)

I told her it's a SCAM. Thanks again for keeping us up to date on all the latest scams

Here is the full email

From: Philip Turner [mailto:[email protected]]
Subject: RE: Car advertised

"Thanks for the swift response, I need you to understand that i am willing and ready to purchase it right away as i really appreciate the price stated and possibly have more pictures of it, put it off the AD site and consider me as your favorite buyer as i am buying this for my Dad and due to the nature of my job and my present location as i am an hydrographer...i will not be able to come for inspection,am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it.

As for the payment..i can only pay via the fastest and secure way to pay online i.e (PayPal) here, as i do not have access to my bank account online, but i have it attached to my pay pal account, and this is why i insisted on using pay pal to pay.

I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after the payment have been made ...so no shipping included and With the issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the courier services company agent so you don't have to worry about that.

It will be so sweet if you can send me your PayPal email now so i can pay in right away and also include your address in your reply as i don't really have much time on here.If you don't have a paypal account, you can easily set up one...log on to www.paypal.com.au and sign up its very easy... i would have loved to talk to you on phone but i work mainly on the sea and our phone network is down on the sea right now due to bad stormy weather, that was why i sent you a text, i even wonder how my message deliver to your phone but for now we can only communicate through the same mailing channel.await your reply asap."

Unbelievable. The best bit is "can't be contacted due to bad stormy weather", freakin hilarious.

Here is my email correspondence with "Gary". Sorry it's so long but I wanted you guys to see it so that you can learn to recognize the signs. I'm sure that he will be changing the name he uses and will continue to try and scam us, so stay alert! I should have known he was a scammer right away because it started out like every other craigslist scam email but because I only posted on the forums I didn't expect it...

Gary Babylon to me
show details Jul 13 (2 days ago)

Gary: i saw your ads listed for sale. Am really interested, let me know if
you still have it available for sale .And how much is it finally going
for?.
Me: I've had a bunch of offers but I'm fairly firm on the price so
it is currently still available. Let me know if you're interested,
thanks!
Gary: Am very much interested, its long have being seaching for one. Where
are you located ?.
Find out the cost of shipping via usps express delivery to GA.
So that i can make the payment right now.
Me: I am located in the suburbs of Washington D.C. if you want to purchase the watch I can give you a few options for payment. If you have references I will accept standard paypal plus fee, if not then I will accept paypal as a gift. If you don't use paypal then you can either wire the money to my account or you can go to a Bank of America branch and deposit the funds into my account. I prefer to do USPS express overnight fully insured and it would run about $50. Let me know how you would like to proceed, thanks!
Gary: ok.Send me paypal money request.
This is my address:
SARAH BABYLON
1788 AUSTELL ROAD APT Q9 MARIETTA, GA. 30008
Me: I'm not sure but I don't think it's possible to send a request for
funds with a gift transaction. If you can just send the paypal gift in
the amount of $3,550 to [email protected]. Let me know if you have any
issues.
Gary: i dont understand what you talking about.send money request order and
i will do the payment straight away.
Me: I apologize, I will explain further. I don't accept standard paypal payments unless you have references from previous watch transactions and you must pay the additional 3%. The reason for this is that it has happened in the past (not to me but to others on the forum) that someone claims they didn't receive the item or received it in a condition that is other than what had been stated and they receive a refund from paypal. This is a somewhat common scam and this causes a need for sellers to protect themselves as much as buyers. However, if you pay via paypal "gift" there are no fees and you have no recourse to get your money back from paypal. That said, I have many very solid references from previous watch transactions and my descriptions are always accurate. If I somehow make a mistake in my description and you are not satisfied with the watch then you may return it to me in the same condition as it was received within 3 days for a full refund.
Paypal gift is used to send funds electronically without fees and is commonly used in online transactions when the buyer trusts the seller. I don't believe that I can send a payment request for a paypal gift transaction but I will look into it further and get back to you. If you are comfortable with it then you can go to your paypal account and click on the tab that says "Send Money", then where it asks what the payment is for, you will click on the "personal" tab and select gift.
Feel free to call me if you have any further questions, thanks!
Gary: I understand you.But am sorry i can only make payment via paypal
secured transaction plan. that will secure my money and secure your
good as well.
IF YOU STILL WANNA DO BUSSINESS SEND ME AN INVOICE
Me: Please send references so that we may proceed, thanks!
Gary: sorry i cant take that risk.
Me: I don't understand what risk you are referring to. I understand that you don't want to purchase from me without using paypal secured transaction and I'm okay with that, I just need you to add for the fees incurred and provide me with references. If you have never done a watch deal online and have no references then please call me and we can discuss doing a paypal secured deal plus fees. I'm not intentionally trying to be difficult but I do buy and sell watches quite regularly on multiple forums and this is pretty standard operating procedure.
Gary: This is my first time, i will buy wrist watch on internet. I just
don't want anyone to full me. Let me know the total cost including
shipping and paypal charges. Is this your paypal account
[email protected] ?.
Gary: nothing in my email yet.
Me: I would really like to talk to you before we proceed, is there a number that I can reach you at? Also, what forum did you see the watch in and what is your user name there? Thanks!
Gary: i came by your listed item for sale on the rolexforums.com
Me: Are you willing to talk on the phone?
Gary: +447011137523
Me: Where are you located?
Gary: East London. My wife lives in the state.

Nigerian Internet Scam. Let me guess. He wants you to ship the watch to his sister in Nigeria and you received an email from PayPal requesting a tracking number to confirm the item has been shiped in order to finalize payment.
Yeah right!
Old Scam.

I actually got nauseous reading this thread. I hope someone stops this person.
Really, really nauseous right now. If I ever have to sell any of my watches it will be bank wire only into a special account at my bank or I'll send it to Tony on consignment. I absolutely don't trust 99% of people anymore, that's a shame.
