Quick ? Re:minor hit and run
At about 215 today some nut in his car blew his horn at me at a stop light. I was right at the place in an intersection where one lane became 2 to turn. I pulled up as far as I could, but could not really get out of his way. He went anyway and sideswiped my bumper and trim and corner paint with presumably his bumper and mirror. He barely got me causing almost invisible scratches in the plastic and leaving behind some cheap black paint on my nice hard clearcoat. The plastic portion of my bumper popped forward as well, but was righted by me, and is intact. I don't see how this old jackhole could have not realized it, but he was busy screaming at me to move out of his way. In terms of damage, there really is none. Though I'm sure replacing the trim and buffing out my paint would be a couple hundred dollars.
Would you report it just to f with him? Or let it go. I feel making the report would be more hassle than it's worth. I plan to leave it as is either way. It's a 7 yr old SUV, though in excellent condition. I have his plate #.

I definitely would at least report it. If you don't, he may report YOU for hitting him!

I'm not sure I want him to have access to my address in a police report. I'm sure he also has insignificant damage to his older modest car.

Tell the reporting officer this. He will never know you filed a report unless you go to your insurance co for money or he tries to but you said he doesn't have your plate.

Yup, I would defiantly call the police. Anytime there is even a MINOR fender bender, I would ALWAYS call the police "just in case".

Forget it. Its not worth your time to report it. If the damage is as little as you claim the cops won't do anything bc its just a he said she said situation.

It was a hit and run...the cost of the damage shouldn't matter.

I would want to report it just to f with him, but likely wouldn't as it would bring on too much hassle and stress. You will likely never get the couple hundred bucks but might just cause a big problem for yourself. Probably not worth the risk.

As I said, the damage is very minor, at least to my car, and I would not pursue a repair no matter what happened. (well I would if he tired to sue me) Perhaps I should report it to the police, just to have a timely record of the occurrence in case he had significant damage to his vehicle that he discovered later. Perhaps I'll give the local police a call this evening. Perhaps I could drive down there to make a report, I would hate to have someone come off patrol to come to my home. It seems like a waste of everyone's time, and this nut could get my address by requesting this incident report through the freedom of info act. No? Though he shouldn't know that it was even filed, it's not like the police are going to follow up hit and run of such minor damage. still undecided.

It's not like I had a 35 mph major accident in my work van or something.

I have his, but I don't think he could have mine. And he raced away to make the light.

I'd report it just to have it on record. If he does this again or has done so in the past it'll be an incident of record and help prove a pattern of behavior. Maybe he'll even get a ticket.

I would, partly to protect yourself in the unlikely event he decides to report you and try to blame it on you, and partly because he should have stopped. If there are no injuries, the police may just tell you to file the appropriate form with DMV as some departments are not staffed to write up minor accidents.

Although nothing will probably ever come of it I would report him. Cover yourself.
