Don't do it! Don't do it!
I've slowly been working my way up the wristwatch prestige ladder, and have finally arrived upon a Rolex as my next must-have timepiece. Here's my progression:
1) Sinn UX 2) Omega Aqua Terra 39mm 3) Breitling Steelfish 4) Omega Planet Ocean 42mm 5) Panerai 112 6) Rolex (well, in all honesty, #6 was supposed to be an IWC Portuguese Chrono, but there is a certain Rolex calling to me...which would have been #7, had I acquired the IWC first) So---I have decided on the Milgauss GV. However, there are lots of people on here that suggest going with a Sub, or a SD, or a GMT II as a first piece, then getting the GV down the road. I really dig the GV and the fact that it has such a unique uncharacteristic Rolex style to it. SO---To all the devoted and long-time Rolex collectors/fans out here---Is there any reason that the GV SHOULD NOT be my first Rolex? Can anyone talk me out of it?? |

If you don't need a date feature and you prefer the Milguass then you should go for it.

Why would ANYONE talk you out of it?
It's a classy watch and feels nice on the wrist. (Agree if you don't mind no-date). Last edited by Time2time; 23 July 2011 at 12:47 AM.. Reason: Miss spelling |

Why would we want to talk you out of it? If that is "the one" to you, you can't ask for a better reason to buy it! Go for it and enjoy it man!

For first Rolex I would always recommend Sub, then work from there. IMHO.

I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers. I'm 99.9% sure that the GV is the watch for me. I was just trying to get some feedback/opinions from other enthusiasts that---maybe in the past had decided that the GV was "their one"---and then maybe fell out of love with it----If they had any sagacious advice that would convince me otherwise....
I'm not looking for anybody to say anything bad about the GV or Rolex overall. I'm just looking for people that have owned or are more educated than me on the particular timepiece that I'm considering, to speak up and give their honest opinions. For example--I read a review of the Milgauss here on TRF saying the the locking mechanism on the clasp was loose and since it wasn't spring-loaded would tend to fall ajar due to gravity when held at certain positions----This is the kind of feedback I'm looking for----the type of stuff that you can't surmise on your own in the 3 minutes that you try the unsized watch on your wrist at your local AD....... |

I'd consider the need for a date feature, but other than that...
Buy what you want!! There's no template for this kind of thing. |

I just love the look of an authentic Sub. The feel on the wrist, how it reflects light it just was the one for me, and that was why I got Sub for my first Rolex.
But I would also say "Why should anyone talk you out of getting a Milgauss?" |

If the Milgauss is what you want, then get it! My first Rolex was a TT YM. Not exactly an icon Rolex, but who cares?

Who cares what other people think should be your first Rolex????? Your first Rolex should be the one you love as long as you can afford it. There is no set progression for buying a Rolex or any other brand............
BTW, the IWC Portugese Chrono wouldn't be too bad of a choice either.......that watch is stunning!!!! |

When folks ask, I usually recommend a DJ, Sub, or GMT. Since you're already into watches, I don't know anything except to tell you to buy what your think you'll really like. I kind of prefer the Exp to the Milgauss, but you've made a nice choice.

you are the one that has to wear it. get what you want, period. i own an explorer ii white dial and a PAM 164. neither are "classic introductory models to the brands", but, one is a rolex and one is a panerai, and i couldn't be happier.

Get whatever you want!! Looks like you have some pretty nice divers in your collection (I'm assuming you still own those watches in the list, here). I wouldn't worry about where anyone else tells you to start. It doesn't matter. Get what sings to you. Subs are a dime a dozen. The Sub just happened to sing to me and that is why it is my one and only Rolex. If something else sang to me then I would have gotten that. There is no wrong place to start in the brand.

I think everyone around these parts suggest the classic models first as your first Rolex, but that's just an opinion. If the Milgauss is what you want, if thats the one calling your name, go with your instinct.
However, these are dangerous waters when you get into Rolex. Odds are, you'll want a Sub/SD/GMT eventually. Trust me. ; ) |

IMHO if you dont dive, the sub has no place on your wrist... Just buy what you like and I applaud your decision on a Milgausse... A unique piece that you don't see every 20 year old with some money and no clue what that watch is wearing
Just my 2 cents |

One thing to consider is the lume on the MG isn't that strong, the Sub's dial will be easier to read in the dark. I also feel the Sub is a flatter, more wearable watch. Then there's the much better glidelock clasp. But as has been said, buy whichever watch you think you'll appreciate the most.
