AD in Wynn says: Rolex + hot tub = NOT waterproof... any thoughts, experience, or...
knowledge?
I was talking to her while looking at the three possible purchases I'm getting close to making, and she says that the metal expanding and contracting from the heat makes the seals not function and water will get in. good to know! I was looking at the Yg subC, the Wg daytona, and the Yg daytona. still can't decide!!! ( pics along those lined are welcome and not a thread drift ). thx! :) |

The amount of expansion is minimal and should not be affecting the integrity of a well-maintained watch.

I personnally would stand by Rolex depths of 300m or 100m and not the dribble that comes from many AD's uninformed mouths!

I do it all the time. The watch is designed to withstand boiling water for several minutes. Someone here can post the advertisement that claims such...
Enjoy hot-tubbin with your Rolex. |

I have worn my Sub and DJ's in the hottub every morning for at least 6 or 7 seven years. Never had an issue.
If she is right, then you shouldn't dive with it in cold water either cause the metal would contract. I call BS...

This is a great place to look, but a lousy place to buy anyway.
Did you happen to venture a little ways down the way and check out their Pateks, JLCs and such while you were there? Great place to window shop.

The Wynn and the Palazzo are great places to window shop. They carry a number of different brands. I also like going to Tourneau's in the Ceasars Forum Shop. If you like looking at watches there are tons of places to look at real great watches in Vegas.

I wouldn't worry about water getting in, you'll read many posts about AD's being misinformed and creating misconceptions.
Take a look at the White Gold Sub, one of my personal favorites!

This past weekend I wore my TT Sub in a hot tub for 10 minutes at a time and then jumped into a pool at least 20 times and it did not leak. The hot tub was 100 degrees and the pool was 82.
I don't see what the big deal is? Now putting it in 200 degrees and then right into 33 degrees maybe an issue.

I remember in Saudi, the days would be 120, nights maybe down to 80 or so, and we'd go to sleep wearing all our clothes and wrapped up in sleeping bags. Wake up sweating again. Fun. |

She is right that the seals will be expanding and contracting but the amount is so minute and absolutely has no effect on water tightness if you're just chilling in a hot tub. See above ad re boiled Rolex.
Bottom line, that woman has no idea what shes talking about. She heard it somewhere and tells all her customers...

Ask her to sit in a hot tub with you, and if your watch breaks, you'll buy her one...

I didn't know Thor Heyerdahl wore a Rolex. Wonder if he did the Kon-Tiki thing wearing it?

The AD's whole premise does not make sense...here is my take on a mechanical watch in a hot tub;
1) The heat of a hot tub will cause the O rings to expand and create an even tighter seal making it even MORE watertight!! 2) The metal will not expand in any measurable amount.. max temp for a hot tub is maybe 140 degrees Fahrenheit. 3) The heat of the hot tub WILL affect the accuracy of your Rolex Remember they are regulated to temperature and position. Immersion in hot water will cause a change in the viscosity of the oil in the watch and the interaction of metal to metal parts. I do not know if the disruption to the watches accuracy is permanent or if the watch will return to normal performance once it cools down to normal temperatures. Maybe a watchmaker of someone who knows more about such things can comment as I have often wondered and not taken my watches into hot tubs and saunas for fear of impacting accuracy/regualtion. |

If the case and case back were dissimilar metals and the temperature change was huge it is theoretically possible if the seal was in poor condition it MAY leak. But, highly improbable.
My God - I sound like Mr. Spok.
