Explorer II vs. SS Daytona
I'm new to TRF but I need some opinions already...
My dream watch has always been the SS Daytona with a white dial but the price always seemed a bit steep to me. A couple of years ago, I was lucky enough to get an Explorer II with a white dial which I have worn everyday since. I love it! I now have an opportunity to get my dream Daytona, but in order to do so, I have to sell the Explorer. The problem is, I'm not sure I can part with my Expy. I know this comes down to personal preference, but what does everyone think? Explorer II or Daytona? Is the Daytona as appropriate as a daily wearer? Thanks! |

Get your dream watch. It can handle everyday life.

Daytona is fine as a daily driver.

Tom, this is a tough one.
I pretty much only wear white dials and purchased an Explorer 2 a few years back. Got bored with it within 3 weeks and sold it...luckily for a profit. Had always loved the Daytona but never imagined I'd own one due to cost. Two years ago I was offered a brand new one from an AD with a discount that was hard to refuse, and no tax. Couldn't believe I was spending so much on a watch but I went for it and BOY, do I ADORE IT!!!! Only you can decide if you're OK with giving up the Explorer 2 that you love. Ideally you'd be able to hang on to it to, but I totally understand why you have to sell it in order to get the Daytona. For me, the Daytona is in a league of its own...classy, sporty, and SEXY! And yes, a daily wearer indeed! So it has PCLs, so what?! Yes you'll get scratches but I am sure the pleasure you'd receive from wearing it would far outweigh the concern over 'character scratches'. Good luck! |

Not too flashy? I've enjoyed the subtle look of the Explorer.

The PCL and polished bezel on the Daytona can get pretty banged up from daily wear I guess, since the Exp2 is all brushed scratches aren't that noticable. I have a Polar that I use everyday and everywhere, but I really like the Daytona as well, but I prefer the black dial. Good luck deciding, either way you will have a stunning watch

Karis,
Thank you! It's great to hear from someone who has been in my situation and made the jump to the Daytona. I'm feeling encouraged! Thanks! |

BUT, I don't want to say 'sure, get rid of that Explorer 2' because I know what it's like to be so in love with a watch. Would hate for you to make a mistake. Geez, I'm not helping here am I?! |

I went for the kill on my first watch...Daytona, white face and wear the hell out of it everyday. I think it looks great and goes with everything...jeans, suits, workout gear, wearing just boxers around my house.."yes, i went there".
If you always wanted it, go get it and you can always trade down later on in life. From my personal experiences in life, don't settle and just go get what you want. |

I'm a fan of both watches, but I don't own either. I bought two Exp II's (black) for sons and am hoping to buy a Daytona, tt white face. For my lifestyle, a typical Rolex is perfect-- tough, simple, stylish, dressy and sporty-- for everything I do. I don't baby a Rolex and expect it to be wearable in almost every situation. I'm not sure I feel that way about a $10,000 Daytona that has lots of parts and costs about $1,000 to service.
If you can only keep one watch, it's tough to beat your Exp II. If you want a dressier, richer looking watch that is pretty special in WIS circles, get the Daytona. |

Both are great watches but I would never sell my first Rolex regardless of the model. It just represents too much to me. It's a constant reminder that the work ethic instilled in me by my parents was a worthy lesson to learn.

Only you can decide..
I have both and the Exp II sees way more wrist time; plus I find the white dial Daytona a bit more difficult to see in bright light.. Still, I know that that itch needs to be scratched.. you can't lose much with a Daytona..

Welcome to TRF! If possible try to keep the Explorer. It was your first, right? Also the 16570 goes out of production, so if you sell it and want one later you have to go second hand. Any Rolex will be good for everyday use. So that's not a concern. Good luck. Let us know what you decide for. Best, A |

You can definitely wear the Daytona daily. I guess the question is do you mind babying your watches? If you do, then the EX II would be the better choice due to brushed SS finish. I have both watches, and I feel more comfortable wearing the EX II daily, too.

Both model's have their fans, but, long after you have stopped talking about the Explorer, you will still be eulogising about the Daytona. Good luck.

Why even debate it when your dream watch is the Daytona. You won't even think about your Explorer once you start wearing the Daytona.

Thank you everyone for all of the advice!
I'm leaning towards the Daytona but I'm staring at the Explorer on my wrist. I'm going to do some shopping this weekend in NYC, so we'll see what happens. I'll post an update with the results, or lack thereof. Thanks! |

I'm sorry but I've never been a fan of the Exp. II. I would ditch the Explorer in a heartbeat to get a Daytona. It sounds like you want the Daytona so go for it.

Once you get the Daytona, especially a White Face, you will ask yourself, "What Explorer?"
