Daytona Decision - help!
Hi guys.
I am new to this forum and just wanted to how excellent it is and how much I have enjoyed it so far. I have recently been after a SS Daytona. About 2 weeks ago I rang about 40 AD's around the UK. Generally most said they were hard to come by and the majority were not even taking names, or the list was so long it was not worth bothering. I put my name down on a few lists where the waiting time was shorter. One AD said they could source a new one with a £500 premium, but I wasnt interested. However, I considered buying one from DavidSW, but decided against this due to the risk of getting stunk by import duties. I rang up an Ad to ask his opinion regarding this and he said if I was in a position to go ahead he was getting one in (a white dial) in 2 weeks and I could have it! I was initially excited, but having done some research on this forum I am beginning to have some doubts. - is the Daytona now over-priced? - if a new ceramic Daytona appears in 2013, will the value of the old model fall? I must confess to being very excited about the prospect of a new ceramic daytona. I think it could look stunning and I would almost certainly want to buy one. If I buy one now and the value plummets then flipping it for a new model could be expensive. I am not sure what to do. I love the look of the Daytona, but my gut is telling me perhaps the sensible think to do is wait. What does everone think? I only have a week to make up my mind |

If the SS daytona has been difficult for you to obtain now, just imagine what it will be like for you to get a new ceramic bezel SS daytona if/when it is ever released. You should get the SS now and sell it later if you decide that you would rather get the ceramic one. The current daytona should still hold its value.

Sure it's over-priced. Over $10k usd for a SS watch.
But you can't make one in your garage. You haven't even owned it and you are thinking of selling. I think you have your answer ;-) |

don't buy a watch and think of resale value at the same time.
in one week, you could have a Daytona on your wrists. if you like the ceramic ones, if or when it ever gets released, you could buy another Daytona.. |

If you have the chance to buy a new Daytona then I'd say get it, it is the one that you lust for so not as though your buying a pup!. As others have said the waiting list for the ceramic will be huge, in the meantime you will have had the pleasure of wearing your watch for 1-2 years.

I like the Daytona and have contemplated one myself. However, for what it is, it seems over-priced. I have a Speedie Pro that is very handsome, has a bulletproof movement and history that surpasses that of the Daytona. A SS watch with a chrono should really not be that expensive. Supply and demand, such as what you've been experiencing in your search, is part of the reason...at least in the past. It's a "hype" watch...plain and simple.

You sure? I was in Hong Kong about 1 year ago and in an AD. They were able to get you a Daytona but at a premium.....

I can understand your dilemma, and can sympathise that you don't want to make a "mistake" and get buyers remorse, and I don't mean to sound harsh, but any "advice" or prediction on future resale values is pure speculation and would be akin to looking into a crystal ball!
There are so many other factors that may impact future pricing (eg. the global financial crisis, currency fluctuations etc) that any prediction now is just a gamble. If you really love the Daytona, get one (I did ). You'll have a few years to enjoy, and if/when a ceramic SS is available.. well who knows.... maybe you have a better job, more money, even win the lottery and can buy it without flipping. There will always be something new/better around the corner... but I chose long ago to just get what I want when I want it, and enjoy life... let us know how you go, and don't forget to post pics, we love pics

It is ones opinion whether or not the SS Daytona is currently over priced. Some would be glad to pay full MSRP for the watch today and not look back. Others think it has been priced too high and would rather buy a different model. You need to determine this yourself.
If you have had this much trouble getting the current SS Daytona, imagine how difficult it will be for you to source the proposed ceramic version in a few years. In additon, we can all assume the current model will have price increases between now and when the prposed ceramic model is released, making it even more expensive. The proposed ceramic version will most certainly be priced higher than the price of the current model at that time. Buy the watch to wear and enjoy. If you are concernd about its value dropping, spend the $ on something else. |

I am sure if you ask DavidSW what the final costs will be he can provide all of this information for you. I imagine he has done this quite a bit and has all of this information.
You are the final decision maker as to whether the watch is over priced or not. Do you want it bad enough to pay the price they are asking for or not, it's really that easy. I wanted it bad enough and I bought it. I could have purchased a timex for a whole lot less. Is the SS version better for you or is the next one coming out going to be the one you should get. If you have yet to compare both side to side and you have doubts I would recomend you wait and compare them before deciding.

a couple of months back, i wanted a Daytona as well.
and since the asking price for a SS was actually more than a TT in the pre-owned market, i got a TT instead and actually like it more than the SS. i believe people who go for SS are following the hype that SS will appreciate more. at the way gold is going, i don't think my TT will devalue so badly anyway. if you must get BNIB, the TT after discount is not very much more than a SS one with premium added. maybe the real question to ask is do you want a Daytona or do you want a SS Daytona? |

However I am sure with everything there is a mixed bag of different things going on. As usual everyone does it for their own reasons, and what is important to them.

I think a trip to the US could kill two birds with one stone. The cost of the "holiday" could be offset by the savings on the Daytona. It would certainly cost more than if you purchased the watch in the UK, but I would rather the difference pay for a good chunk of the travel than go to an AD.

Yes I have spoken to David SW. It would be a nice price saving and he was adamant it was safe to ship the watch to the UK avoiding getting stung by extra taxes. However I felt the risk of getting caught was not worth it...perhaps that was wrong? If I had a holiday to Florida planned would pay a visit, but not sure that's an option at the moment.

The plot thickens. Had a call earlier from the AD to say the rolex shipment has arrived and the White dial SS Daytona is there. Went to see it and must admit it looks gorgeous in the flesh. He has given me till saturday lunch time to decide if I want it. Still undecided at this stage though, going to sleep on it. Any more opinions would be welcomed.

Here's another.
But in the end, it's going to be you that decides what works best for you.

Thanks guys for all the advice. Love the pics....makes me want it, but I'm still scared to make the final decision. Guess it's the price. Still got a day and half to decide!
