White gold in Rolex, is it greyish or....?
silver white gold?. I recall on a previous post in the tech section http://rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=168380
"TRF" Member crhfish gave wonderful data on the many types of combination of alloys for the different gold colors. He mentions that white gold comes as grey white gold and white gold. For those who own white gold Rolex which of the two does it appear to be most likely? I would imagine that Rolex would guard their exact percentage of elements a secret but it would be nice to at least inform us what metals are in this gold composition in case some elements may cause an allergy. Imagine spending big money on a gold watch that you may not be able to wear!!! It is at least nice of them to inform us that in their steel versions they use 904L which tells us the elements in it for those that are worried about if this stainless steel is appropriate for them |

The white gold on my DateJust--bezel, numerals, hands--is between true white and a slightly yellowish cast. In some lighting the numerals and hands look a bit yellow.

My 18239 D-D is a crisp white gold. Not yellow or grey.

I went in to buy a WG DD and I walked out with a new 116234 black dial with diamomd numerals. Could not justify the extra 21k, even the salesman agreed!

White gold is a flat very pale yellow colour but then it is rhodium plated and that gives it a bright lustrous steel colour.

The steel & white gold, Rolex uses are identical in color... not weight, but indistinguishable in color..

I agree, WG and SS look completely different to me, but most people can't tell SS, WG or Platinum apart.

The PLAT pieces cast more "Grays" than white, [making PLAT an even lower radar blip], and man I love the weight of a PLAT DD ~ !

If allergies is what worries you, Id be more concerned about 904L, which has higher levels on nickel. I know some people are allergic to that element, however Ive never heard about anyone complaining about Rolex's steel. As to gold, the SS and WG models look really similar in real life.

When comparing my DSSD to my WG sub.......
The DSSD is a grey color where the WG Sub is more of a shiny white silvery color. Although I will say that my wife's 31mm datejust diamond dial bracelet that is SS with PCL...does look a lot like my WG Smurf.....but I would say that the WG is whiter and more reflective....almost more aluminum like. |
